Facebook bans an advert for bras....

Corporations are aligning their products to social-justice goals and making consumers feel virtuous as they swipe their credit cards.

Call me cynical, but if I was a marketing type, I'd probably try really hard to get an advert banned. It guarantees exposure. (And, here I am talking about it, so more fool me Hmm)

Given the pressure (and even legislation) that concerns objectification etc, Facebook no doubt has a commendable code of ethics on what's appropriate or not. Whomever is responsible for this advert, they likely studied that code very closely... and will be getting a nice big bonus now.

I'm not convinced that women are being any less manipulated than they've traditionally been.

I think it is a great advert and I really don't understand why it has been banned.

VestalVirgin · 09/09/2017 13:57

I really don't understand why it has been banned.

It has been banned because it is somewhat feminist and the owners of facebook hate women. No great mystery, really.

TotalUnknown · 09/09/2017 14:11

Facebook are afraid of breasts, remember? You can't post a breastfeeding picture, even with no breast visible.

TotalUnknown · 09/09/2017 14:12

BTW I like the ad, too. Especially the actors' variety of ages and shapes.

Jog22 · 09/09/2017 14:14

You can get banned for saying dyke in FB. They don't like women.

Don't they tolerate porn, though?

I think it is not about breasts as such. More about the fear that women might think of themselves as human.

Good advert.

Xenophile · 09/09/2017 14:55

It was a good advert, and yes, Facebook is fine with porn, domestic violence, animal abuse, far right politics and videos of people being murdered in various ways, but an advert for women's underwear gets banned. I'm not sure ethics is a word that can be used in a sentence describing Facebook's banning algorithms.

"Facebook no doubt has a commendable code of ethics on what's appropriate or not... that concerns objectification"

Ob. Ject. If. I. Cation.

God, give me strength.

And, yes, the advert's good. That so was not the point.

I'm not surprised, when this video on checking for breast cancer had to substitute manboobs for female nipples

MotherPeresA · 09/09/2017 15:07

I was not defending Facebook - merely assuming that they had a policy which included an attempt to stop the sexual objectification of women.

... and, they do.

Facebook doesn't genuinely give a rat's ass about women's objectification, or anything else to do with women's rights. HTH.

Xenophile · 09/09/2017 15:27

Facebook doesn't genuinely give a rat's ass about women's objectification, or anything else to do with women's rights.

Hence the large amount of porn, DVA images and memes and so on that "don't violate community standards".

VestalVirgin · 09/09/2017 15:45

I once saw a step to step instruction on how to replace your nipples in a breastfeeding pic or the like, with male nipples cut out from some other picture, as male nipples aren't banned on facebook.

Of course, I imagine that's all not necessary anymore, now. I mean, the female model could just have identified as male, which would have instantly turned her breasts into non-censored manboobs, right?

Someone has actually made that very claim to Facebook when they censored a picture of women's breasts. And indeed they retracted.

VestalVirgin · 09/09/2017 16:06

Wow, that's misogyny taken so far that it almost resembles feminism.

Do you think the advert could be saved by claiming that all the women in it identify as male and just "dressed as women" for the purpose of that advert?

VestalVirgin · 09/09/2017 16:09

(To clarify, I don't think misogyny is ever a good thing, but there's the theory that everything is a circle, and that if you travel in one direction far enough, you will eventually reach the opposite side ... like sailing west to get to India, which is in the east, that sort of thing.)

Ereshkigal · 09/09/2017 16:13

I think they should. It would show up how ridiculous FB is.

And hats off to Henry for being a good sport.

Not seeing anything wrong with that video. I don't use Facebook so no idea if it violates anything.

PricklyBall · 09/09/2017 18:23

Henry is my new hero!

And yes, of course the original ad is designed to manipulate to get us to buy a product, that's the whole purpose of ads. But I do like it when they have a modicum of humour about them. (I loved the "Boddington's, Cream of Manchester" series). Doesn't detract from the basic point that Facebook are a bunch of misogynistic wankers.

QuentinSummers · 09/09/2017 21:42

I just read about an MP reporting rape threats on Facebook and being told that didn't violate community standards.
Can't believe rape threats are ok but bra videos are not. Guess it just illustrates who "the community" are

Datun · 09/09/2017 23:26

Facebook has banned the word dyke, when it is used by lesbians. They will happily allow rape threats, but not sites which point out the misogyny of those rape threats.

They won't allow breasts, but then will allow them if they are women identifying as men showing those exact same breasts.

Fb is moderated by sexist men who are totally onboard with the oppression of women.

Banning this ad is idiocy. It's not smart, and it's an own goal. The bad press will prove that.

I don't think, for one minute, that the banning of the ad is designed to promote the product in question.

Just misogynists doing what misogynists do.
