I s'pose they are disabled.

By the fact they don't want to accept biology, logic and scientific reasoning.

They aren't accepted to the toilets of their sex of choice, they don't want to go in the toilet of their own sex and guessing no one wants them toileting themselves in public, this is a compromise.

The disabled toilets tend to be single cubicles so they aren't bugging anyone else while they're in there and transgender people are so rare that if someone else who needed the loo came along, the wait wouldn't be too long.

But they're now available for everyone not just transgender people.

So disabled people just have to get to the back of the queue at the only toilet they can physically use while they pee and poo themselves and their pads overflow? That's cool, cos no other minority group can have anything for themselves that TRAs wont covet?

Yes their 'rights' trump everyone's that's becoming abundantly clear.

Will be interesting to see how things develop in Ireland. They adopted a change in the law for gender identity which means men who identify as women are granted access to all services and spaces as women. I gather the law is only now starting to be implemented.

Why would the trans community accept that though, surely they'd want access to the toilets of the gender they identify with. Not disabled.

Single stall gender-neutral facilities are fine, just not at the expense of disabled people or women who prefer a female-only loo.

Gender dysphoria is still listed as a mental illness right? So I suppose it is a disability. I don't think most trans people will want to be seen that way though so not sure how this could work.

It's a dilemma, but seems the best option currently. I'm also not in favour of making all toilets unisex. I had to use one the other week, and it was disgusting. Just like my DH tells me gent's loos are. I also wasn't too wild at coming out of the cubicle to find a man preparing to use the urinals right next to the sink. He waited until I left, fortunately.

As Griswald says if trans people want to accept that they have gender dysphoria and therefore a disability, I think it is fair enough for them to use the disabled loos. There would be no need to assign them then though.
The needs of disabled people are so often disregarded. The disabled loos are seen as a convenience for everyone:
parent with pram?- use the disabled loo
long queue? - use the disabled
need a storage space? - use the disabled loo
cleaner needs to store equipment? - use the disabled loo
and now
transgender?- use the disabled loo

Have an actual disability? don't be so entitled

I'm somewhat surprised that the trans community there have allowed it. The TRA rhetoric can come across as neediest and most victimised victims ever, with less 'pride' about it than a demand that everyone else take care of and prioritise them. This kind of thoughtless quick fix just adds to that perception, and it's going to lead to one hell of a backlash.

They are missing the point though. If it is labelled 'all gender' plus accessible, people won't see that and compute "Oh, this toilet is for people with disabilities or who are trams". They will just think it's open to anyone. So it will impact on people with disabilities - of whom far far more have needs that are 'invisible'. It will impact on people with disabilities far more than the uni seem to think. And yes, there are 90 accessible toilets but if you are in a particular part of the campus you won't be near most of them!

And the bloke from the SU saying that there had been no reports of problems yet... well, there probably won't be either because trans people are some bloody sacred cow and everyone's terrified of speaking out in any way against them riding roughshod over other people's hard won rights.

A 16% reduction in the number of facilities solely for people with disabilities across the campus is disgusting.

The thing is in a university you're going to have a high percentage of young people who identify as some sort of trans. Non binary etc

In a thread that is about provision for disabled students being reduced, perhaps don't use "disabled" as an actual slur.

Sorry Xenophile, I wasn't clear. I was making the point that it's not going to be a small problem for disabled students at uni. The general population are not likely to come across it loads at work. There's absolutely zero legitimate reasons for a 'non binary on Thursdays' person to need a special toilet.

Sorry Gris, I didn't mean to come across as if I was criticising what you wrote, more expressing my frustration at the fact that it's always women or people with disabilities who have to budge up, and it's shit. I agree that because it's in a University setting the problem isn't going to be small, which makes it even more shit.

I was recently at a theatre event where notices had been stuck over what used to be the ladies and the gents.

The notices used the combined male and female symbol together with an explanation that the toilets behind one consisted of x cubicles and y urinals and the other consisted of z cubicles and no urinals. Patrons were encouraged to use the facilities which most closely matched their gender identity. Gender neutral facilities are also available if requested.

I don't know what or where the gender neutral facilities were - presumably the accessible toilets.

I am not sure what criteria would apply if one were to request to use the gender neutral facilities. In theory most of the regular posters here could ask - although I suppose it is meant for trans people who are not comfortable in the loos usually used by the opposite biological sex.
