Girl assaulted twice on train within 15 minutes by separate men

Another case of a girl not only being subject to unwanted attention from men but being targeted then, having moved seats to avoid the first man, being sexually assaulted by another man. Yet again, it's so normalised for girls and women to be seen as existing for the sexual gratification for men that two men travelling separately saw it as perfectly acceptable to treat a girl in this way, touching and kissing her against her will. An abhorrent view of girls and women which is so widespread.

Time for men not to assault women and girls.

Glosswitch writes eloquently on women only train carriages;

That's an excellent article (as usual from her). Thanks for posting DJ.

This is another abhorrent case in which two men, out together, decided to trawl the streets looking for a woman to attack: www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-suffolk-41035610

Not that it should be remarkable but I think the judge's words here from his summing up were, in the circumstances, positive:

He said every woman should be able to "walk in every street, in every town, without the fear of being attacked".

A refreshing antidote to victim blaming and messages telling women and girls to guard against such attacks (impossible anyway).

I think they do have female only carriages in Japan and they work quite well. Of course men need to change their behaviour and society needs to deal with these men. The fact is though that although we should be able to do a hole host of things safely we can't.

DeleteOrDecay · 24/08/2017 14:50

I'm sure it does work well in Japan until a woman sitting outside of the women only carriage gets assaulted and then gets told its her fault she got assaulted for not sitting in the 'right' carriage.

This sort of segregation just encourages victim blaming and allows men not to take responsibility for their behaviour.

Lauralou69 · 24/08/2017 15:05

I get that I really do but when in 2017 after hundreds of years where men are STILL not getting it then maybe it's time to try something else that may protect women alongside campaigns that teach men how to be civilised human beings??? I've been assaulted twice on public transport.

Gileswithachainsaw · 24/08/2017 15:08

Surely that thing is to not make it the womens responsibility to keep herself safe though and keep men off the hook

DeleteOrDecay · 24/08/2017 15:10

Then they should be the ones shoved in a men-only carriage, not the other way round.

But that will never happen because NAMALT.

Gileswithachainsaw · 24/08/2017 15:11

And they aren't getting it because it has always been about what they were doing or what they were wearing and this just adds to the list of things webshkukd he doing making it our fault

PurpleDoggy · 24/08/2017 15:15

"women only train carriages"

Also men can just say they identify as female and enter such spaces anyways now.

Lauralou69 · 24/08/2017 15:23

So is religious segregation okay?

What can we do in the meantime while waiting for men to get it??

DeleteOrDecay · 24/08/2017 15:28

Well we can't just hide away from them can we? We don't hide away after a terrorist attack in case it happens again, that would be ridiculous.

And like a pp said if an offender was that desperate (and some of them are for some bizarre reason) to get into the women's only carriage is throw on a dress and say they identify as a woman. It's pointless really.

Lauralou69 · 24/08/2017 15:45

I imagine the ones that would do that are very few and far between. Personally, as a woman who has actually been sexually assaulted I think the idea at least deserves some pondering while other measures are put in place.

Gileswithachainsaw · 24/08/2017 16:16

What other measures would be put in place though?

The problem.Would be considered solved. Women are separated from the violent men and there's a vast irpk reason for the assult. They were in the wrong place and took the hit.

Gileswithachainsaw · 24/08/2017 16:16

Cast iron

Gileswithachainsaw · 24/08/2017 16:20

Prosecution stats are already dire. How likely is it that a man would then hebe put away when the very society he lives in deems him unable to control his urges and women have to be kept away instead.

Lauralou69 · 24/08/2017 16:39

Oh I don't know.....tougher sentences, women being allowed to stone men to death like in The Handmaids Tale.......I don't know what the answer is just sick of all talk and no action while women continue to get assaulted daily.

Gileswithachainsaw · 24/08/2017 16:44

Of course tougher sentences would help.

But that won't happen while women are responsible for their own safety by being made to stay in certain areas because it normalises the male attitude. It's blaming the women. How can men be sentenced when it's the womens fault?

NoLoveofMine · 24/08/2017 18:38

I agree women only carriages are no solution.

However, I can see why it's being discussed but there is another thread about women only train carriages. I started this more about how frequent these attacks on women and girls are, how so many men are minded to commit them that no sooner had a girl moved to avoid the initial attacker as another entirely separate man approached her and, despite being told what had happened, seeing her vulnerable and upset decided to sexually assault her as well and what that says about views towards women and girls which are so normalised. In this context it happening on a train wasn't the main issue - as a 14 year old girl was also recently raped by a man in Birmingham before being raped by a different man after she sought help after the first attack. I meant this thread to be more about male sexual violence against women and girls and how many seem to see women and girls in this way.

I think we need to tell it like it is....men are the issue yes and we need to verify what kind of men do this, is there a cultural perspective for example without people getting their knickers in a twist. Is it less educated men? We need to identify ways to make women feel safer. I don't think women only carriages is a long term solution but I do think it is worth considering in the interim while we identify the enemy......yes I know.....it's men!!
