Irritating quorn advert

Ok I'm prepared to be told I'm over reacting but after a long time lurking ( and reading and learning ... And learning that the way I felt wasn't just me ! ) this is my first post so please be gentle !!

New quorn add
Starts of with voice over " question: how does sam ( who I presume is the mum in the advert ) turn her salad into a hot meal for the men in her life ?"
She then basically seasons some quorn chicken, throws it in the salad and serves it up to what I presume are adults sons and husband . Everybody's happy . The men are all happy ! Lovely

I get its just an advert but to me the whole " here's how to jazz up your quorn chicken" could be done in many different ways but no let's go with stereotypical perma diet mum , ( it's not "turn a salad " it's HER salad . lets trick those silly boys into eating healthy because only women ever do that ?!?!

Obviously mums cooking

I could be way off but this is the type of shit ( way before I found the feminism board ) that just really gets on my fucking tits

I've not seen the advertisement in question but I'd have the same sentiments if I did. It sounds ridiculous and when they could have gone down any number of routes for it, that they chose to perpetuate all these stereotypes, that this advert was pitched and run says a lot. It's also one of a number of messages which embed these outdated gender roles into many from a young age.

NoLoveofMine · 03/08/2017 22:38

Also some people somewhere will always tell you you're overreacting if you discuss any feminist issue, but don't let them convince you that you are.

DJBaggySmalls · 03/08/2017 23:04

You're not over reacting, thats so stale, and it puts me off buying the product.

clumsyduck · 03/08/2017 23:12

Yes that's what is get if I brought this up in "real life " the puzzled look and your over reacting comments .

The advert just makes me cringe . ( as do many others along Similair lines ! )

Just seems so out dated and well as I say cringey!

Thankyou for your replies :)

That doesn't surprise me but you're definitely not! It may seem minor but it's just another message reinforcing the notion of gender roles in us, as well as other stereotypes. I think you're exactly right on all the points you made about it!

WinkyisbackontheButterBeer · 03/08/2017 23:26

Yes it bugs me too. I can't help but be annoyed by the ones that purposely show women doing something that is not the traditional gender role too. Iyswim. There is one for a car where they are racing a car and a motorbike and when they get to the destination the rider takes off its helmet and dun dun duhhhh, its a woman!
Don't get me wrong, I want adverts to show equality but these ones that either use "feminism" (quite literally in inverted commas) as a selling technique just emphasise the different ways that men and woman are viewed and really pee me off.

WinkyisbackontheButterBeer · 03/08/2017 23:27

Sorry for typos and poor word choices but hopefully you know what I mean.

clumsyduck · 04/08/2017 06:51

Yes I totally know what you mean
Like they have gone totally out there way to use a woman in the advert in your example like "hey look at us were not sexist etc " but it's kind of so obvious .
Argh I always struggle to word it right as well Grin

Yes I think the tesco ones are good for this. Just showing off people's favourite recipes or specialities, some women, some men

StealthPolarBear · 04/08/2017 07:02

And the one about the foster carer always makes me a bit teary

NoLoveofMine · 04/08/2017 09:35

I personally don't have an issue with women being depicted in advertising subverting the gender roles which are still dominant in the industry and beyond. Of course the only aim is to make a profit but it still helps to combat these roles and has the potential to make a difference. Also, how do we know they're going out of their way to do it rather than just casting a woman doing something any girl or woman can?

Justcommonsense · 02/02/2018 14:14

Quorn seem to have a knack with this - just seen the advert where a guy makes up for working late by making a quick meal for his partner???? When my partner works late i make him a meal, when i work late he makes me a meal - or has working now become a sin.

ForagingForFaerieGold · 02/02/2018 14:51

Sounds bad but nothing was ever as bad in recent years as the Cif "Be a princess with a spotless home - fit for your prince - and have a happy ever after" bleurgh.

ForagingForFaerieGold · 02/02/2018 14:52

An exercise in how many sexist stereotypes can we can into one ad campaign
