Ireland needs to climb out of the 19th 20th century.

Aaargh do not read the comments. Think 'whats the worst I could read in a Daily Fail comment', assume its that and spare yourself.

Icantreachthepretzels · 04/08/2017 01:55

It was a good video (I took DJs advice and didn't read comments). In fairness to Ireland I think there is a big movement towards repealing the anti -abortion laws, so it's not 'Ireland' that needs to join the 21st Century its specifically the Irish Government, specifically on this issue. Irish women have been campaigning tirelessly and brilliantly for years - they're just being held hostage by the ideology of the government ... and that would never happen here would it Hmm #brexit.

GinaFordCortina · 04/08/2017 09:06

Good point icantreach. Same as in the states and in most countries with appalling records on women's rights. It's old men in government and they're making the laws.

GinaFordCortina · 04/08/2017 09:07

Also that video made me cry like a baby. Very good. Well done AI, maybe you can start worrying about all women though?

KanyesLunchbox · 04/08/2017 21:33

That's a powerful video, although as noted above, the difference in the views between the corridors of power and people on the street is huge. That said, I'm not convinced a referendum to repeal the 8th will pass in the same majority that the marriage referendum did. I fear (I hope I'm wrong), that "women's issues" are still too niche.

VestalVirgin · 08/08/2017 16:17

I don't think it is it being "niche" that is the problem.

All women who are still fertile need the right to have abortions.

And all men who have a woman they allegedly love in their lives should want that right for the women they love.

If the referendum wouldn't pass, then because some people are quite interested in the topic, and very invested in denying women human rights.

SweetGrapes · 08/08/2017 18:26

It is so not niche! It's the first thing men do from Trump to the Taliban.
Oppressing women is real high up on the agenda.

KanyesLunchbox · 08/08/2017 19:54

Sorry, I expressed myself poorly. Women's issues obviously aren't niche, but many in Ireland will see it that way. The same sex marriage referendum passed because everyone and their granny knows someone who is gay and wants them to be happy and have opportunities to marry whomever they choose, thus pulling all the same sex allies into the polling booths. Even fatal fetal abnormalities (and I think whatever legislation is enacted at some point, it will be limited) don't pull the heart strings in the same way and I don't see the abortion referendum bringing boat and plane loads of people home on voting day. I hope to god I'm wrong, but I fear women's allies won't show up.

GinaFordCortina · 10/08/2017 07:13

I understood what you meant clearly lunchbox and I agree. They're seen as a specialist issue rather than 'women's rights are human rights'.

I've been told I was stupid for being a 'one issue' voter. The one issue was women's rights. Hmm

SweetGrapes · 10/08/2017 09:50

Not having a go at you lunchbox. It's just infuriating that one way round it's the first thing people/men can think of. But the other way round, it's niche and no-one will turn out.
