Not sure where to put this, but he is known by feminists because of his refusal to say the multitude of GB pronouns

I don't always agree with what he says and sometimes he is an arrogant arse but to ban him because of his opinions is terrifying. He is undoubtedly an intellectual with many interesting and challenging views

I am dismayed about the way the world is heading, when having a opinion is some kind of hate speech. And when they are coming after the intelligentsia, there IS a problem

He does not have a feminist outlook. However, he does appear to be very principled. So I support him over this issue.

As I recall, his main beef was free speech. The definition of free speech is that the government cannot mandate it. But they are.

If you implement a law that says you have to call somebody by the pronouns of their choice, despite it involving the denial of science, that is a direct infraction of free speech.

He was prepared to go to jail for it. Which has really got everyone's knickers in a twist. I don't think he has been arrested, despite refusing to comply?

It would be very interesting. Because he could easily argue that the golden law of free speech had been broken.

In terms of social media, them banning him is not an infraction of free speech. Because they're not the government.

It's rather chilling that the Internet has become virtually the only means by which people can get their message across. However, someone like Peterson would take this all the way.

I hope he does.

It's back now.

Unknown reasons why it was shut down, unknown why it was reinstated.

Xenophile · 02/08/2017 09:45

The channel was never taken down, he simply can't add new videos to it

AssignedMentalAtBirth · 02/08/2017 10:58

Xen He couldn't access it or google at all and they told him that had broken terms of service but wouldn't sat what. He has access back but can't post

That's really sinister. The implications of this - and the whole direction of shutting down free speech and unbiased scientific research - are really disturbing for the "free" world.

Youcanttaketheskyfromme · 02/08/2017 14:03

I take your point but google and YouTube are privately owned so can ban whoever they like without it infringing on free speech.

I don't agree with them banning him. But they are entitled to do so.

SaskiaRembrandtWasFramed · 02/08/2017 15:09

Yes, they can ban whoever they like, they're private organisations so can set their own rules. However, it is chilling to see what is effectively someone being silenced. I don't think I'd agree with a lot of his views but I'd absolutely defend his right to express them. If he is saying objectionable things then by airing those views people can see that and challenge him. Banning someone doesn't make them change their mind, but it does make me wonder why those who disagree are reluctant to debate what they are saying.

The idea of being locked out of your Gmail because you have said something they didn't like in public is scary and is making me rethink my use of Gmail.
It's a whole other league from being locked out of YouTube.

SaskiaRembrandtWasFramed · 02/08/2017 16:08

It's even more worrying when you consider that Google provide email and other services for universities.

Datun · 02/08/2017 16:14

Before email, it would be like you writing a letter, and the Royal Mail intercepting it and binning it because they don't agree with the contents.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 02/08/2017 16:24

It would be like them going into your house, taking away all your past letters from your filing cabinet and burning them.

AssignedMentalAtBirth · 02/08/2017 16:27

It's a private company yes, but they provide services to communication and it does not, as far as I am aware, include not agreeing with their political standpoint. It's like the Stazi. I agree with a lot of what Petersen talk about re. free speech. And they are closing him down because of his views on free speech?

I've been suspicious of google for some time now and I don't use their browser or search engine. I do have a (non primary) email address using gmail but after this, I am going to close it.

Dr Petersen has a LOT of followers and they are pretty vocal too.

Yes and then removing your name, addesss and phone number from the telephone directory. And anywhere else they can think of.

AssignedMentalAtBirth · 02/08/2017 16:45

Quite true Datun

Truth is I don't have personal details in any of these accounts but some people make their living from YouTube and I think Petersen did have some kind of income from his videos. His research funding was cut after his speeches about the pronouns but his followers have crowdfunded it, possibly through Patreon, not sure. Thing is, YouTube and Google are heavily dependent on advertising, so it's a possibility that they are being pressurised. It's definitely shaping the culture though
