www.bbc.com/news/entertainment-arts-40653383

The highest paid women earns a quarter of what the highest paid man earns and two thirds of the highest paid are men.

No surprises there.

It makes for pretty depressing reading.

I am very shocked at the numbers. The BBC is a public service. Is Chris Evans really worth £2m when you consider the PM gets £150k.

I really wish this exercise would be extended to all companies/organisations in the land. We would then understand the true extent of 'equality'.

PigletWasPoohsFriend · 19/07/2017 18:19

Dan walker more than naga munchetty?

He doesn't just do Breakfast. He is also the main presenters of football and the Olympics, all on the BBC, which will up his pay.

NoLoveofMine · 19/07/2017 18:42

Jon Sopel is in the same band as her, Nick Robinson (who's been there much longer) is in the band above & Norman Smith, her deputy, isn't in the list. So I think her pay, at least, is as fair as it can be.

I don't think any of that suggests she's being paid appropriately (relatively speaking of course - compared to others at the BBC rather than fair pay generally). She's the political editor of the BBC which is an extremely senior correspondent. I don't think the North American editor being in the same band, Nick Robinson being in the band above or her deputy (therefore below her in terms of job) not being on the list show she's being paid fairly in these terms. She's a very experienced and highly regarded figure. It'd not surprise me at all if they'd be paying a man far more given these figures and other comparisons.

LapdanceShoeshine · 19/07/2017 19:05

Nick Robinson was her predecessor, fwiw. He probably got more when he moved to Today.

PigletWasPoohsFriend · 19/07/2017 19:07

Also if you think in purely practical terms, Clare Balding covers events like the Olympics which involves travel and being on and off during the day from the start of the events to the evening roundup every day for 2 weeks

Yes but she had a much bigger role on the paraolympics which was on C4 not BBC.

She also does a lot for BTSport.

I wonder if those that are in the higher brackets work exclusively for the BBC?

Popchyck · 19/07/2017 19:15

Gary Lineker is the second-highest BBC earner and also works for BT Sport.

SueMacartney · 19/07/2017 19:57

Piglet I was just pointing out that what Clare does is more labour intensive (can't think of a better phrase!), even though I know it's probably not worked out like that. If it was me I would find it more annoying that I was paid less for more work.

LapdanceShoeshine · 19/07/2017 19:58

I did like a snippet I heard on Radio 4 driving home, "So why does having a penis mean you are paid more?"

or something very similar.

southeastdweller · 19/07/2017 20:07

Alex Jones, too. She gets paid £50K a year less than Matt Baker.

ladyyyglittersparkles · 19/07/2017 20:12

Ffs the BBC are a bunch of corrupt cunts. Just look at the whole Savile situation. Why is anyone surprised or outraged by this? They don't give two fucks as long as we pay their shitting licence fee

M0stlyBowlingHedgehog · 19/07/2017 20:15

Lapdance didn't Matt also have one earlier which said "and now I'm interviewing the one person we could find who thought I was worth what I was paid... my mum."

KarlosKKrinkelbeim · 19/07/2017 20:18

£2 million for Evans? I'd pay that to make the unfunny gormless bastard fuck the fuck off.
Seriously considering chucking telly and no longer paying licence fee, it's all shite anyway

WellTidy · 19/07/2017 20:20

Matt Baker also presents Countryfile and commentates on gymnastics for the BBC.

SonicBoomBoom · 19/07/2017 20:21

Why is Sarah Montague from the Today Programme not on the list, but all her co-presenters are? Confused (other than because she doesn't have a penis, obviously).

Mishal Hussain does Today, From our Home Correspondent and BBC News, so I guess that's why she's on there.

WinifredAtwellsOtherPiano · 19/07/2017 20:23

Matt Baker fronts Countryfile as well though, which is a huge ratings banker unlike Jones's side-products, so that doesn't seem too unreasonable.
I'd love to see the salaries analysed per hour of TV/Radio product. That'll be why Claudia gets more than Tess btw - because they do the same work on Strictly but Claudia also does 2 hours of radio for 12 months of the year, and Sewing Bee.

This Guardian breakdown is very good at comparing like with like - although I'd disagree with a few of the comparisons, Huw Edwards vs Fiona Bruce and Gary Lineker vs Clare Balding are bang to rights. Balding's agent must be bracing themselves for some challenging discussions.

SueMacartney · 19/07/2017 20:48

Sonic she does less presenting than the others on Today.

PigletWasPoohsFriend · 19/07/2017 21:11

Alex Jones, too. She gets paid £50K a year less than Matt Baker.

Overall she doesn't do as much for the BBC as Matt

Childrenofthestones · 19/07/2017 21:41

Why is Tess Daly on less than Claudia Winkleman?

StarCrossdSkys · 19/07/2017 21:54

Why are they paying anyone £400k a year to present the One Show? The numbers are boggling. They always argue that it's because of the competitive market trying to poach top talent. I'm not at all sure about that. There is a real limit to the amount of work available and it can't be that hard to find someone capable out of 60 million people who live in the country. We manage to find loads of people with the skills to be doctors, teachers and lawyers. Do they seriously think there only a handful of special, special people who can present a daytime tv show?

PigletWasPoohsFriend · 19/07/2017 22:42

Why is Tess Daly on less than Claudia Winkleman?

She does other BBC shows on TV and radio.

squishysquirmy · 19/07/2017 22:52

The awful thing is that I bet the BBC are better than other media organisations on this.

Ineedacupofteadesperately · 19/07/2017 23:27

It's appalling and yes, there is a gender pay gap but I honestly can't get too worked up about it when they're all on such ridiculous sums and it just underlines how unequal our society is. This list after the Grenfell fire and subsequent public discussion about firefighter pay. It's shameful. The talk about a market is rubbish - we always hear how many out of work actors and journalists there are. They could find equally talented people for a fraction of the cost. I for one am sick of seeing the same faces all the time. Their self serving justifications for why they're all worth so much just don't make sense (particularly when you have equally popular presenters on such different sums, albeit all well paid in very nice jobs, but I'd be inclined to see if Clare Balding would take over Lineker's job - she's so much better value for money!)

I have a friend who is a university lecturer, she is one of the top experts in her field in the world, but her pay is less than 60k. I asked her why not more (given her stature I thought it would be more). She said that there is a pay scale set and agreed across the sector and when she'd asked why pay wasn't higher the answer was always that the line of people wanting her job is very long - maybe true, but surely that's true of media jobs too? I really think the line of people wanting these presenting jobs who can do it must be far greater than the line of people qualified (to PhD level) in a very specialised academic subject? I'm not saying my lecturer friend is worth more, rather that these presenters are worth less, and all the "reasons" for such high pay don't stack up.
