So, is anyone besides me pleased that the new doctor is a woman?

And also, predictable response from dudebros.

DH was uncharacteristically raging about the DM and Sun coverage of this, saying they've rounded up lots of JW pics without much on. He's really affronted by such blatantly sexist coverage.

Lottapianos · 17/07/2017 19:52

I'm chuffed that they have cast a woman. I had already decided that if it was yet another quirky bloke, I was not going to watch the next series. My first choice would have been Olivia Colman closely followed by Phoebe Waller Bridge, but still happy. I can't quite imagine Jodie Whittaker in the role yet, but I think that's the case for everyone new Doctor. I wish her tons of luck in dealing with the sexist bullshit that has already started up

whoputthecatout · 17/07/2017 19:53

I'm not a fan but can't help being amused that there are people out there who can accept that Dr Who is a time traveller, a shape shifter and immortal but can't be a woman. Grin Suppose it still says a lot about our society.

ISaySteadyOn · 17/07/2017 20:15

I agree. DH and I did once have wishful thinking about Marina Sirtis (Deanna Troi) the Doctor as she said on a dvd extra that she'd like to give it a go. I think Jodie Whitaker looks good though.

I'm not surprised by all the frothing from the usual types. It's been made clear for a while now that time lords can change sex when they regenerate. Was there much fuss when the Master became Missy?

squishysquirmy · 17/07/2017 20:42

Me!
I hope she's really good because she has a lot to prove. (It is crap though that I feel this, because if a man was less than amazing in the role it would reflect only on him, whilst women so often end up representing all of womenhood, iyswim). Like Lotta I hoped it would be Olivia Colman. I am not surprised because I thought there was a lot of foreshadowing in the last series (especially the last episode) that suggested the next doctor would be female.

The backlash is frustrating, but at least it is overt proof that this stupidity still exists.

WhattheChuff · 17/07/2017 20:54

The backlash was exactly the same with StarWars. When the lead character in Rogue One was announced as female there was so many whiny shits moaning about their being "too many women in Star Wars". It was a fucking joke.
There's only four main roles, possibly five in the whole universe!

Rufustherenegadereindeer1 · 17/07/2017 20:55

Yep pleased

Saw it coming

Wanted Olivia coleman

MrsJayy · 17/07/2017 20:58

It is Doctor Who Grin I am really pleased and she is a good actor I think she will do just fine all this angst the Doctor is an alien not a man.

MrsJayy · 17/07/2017 21:00

People didn't give 2 hoots Missy was the Master i was omg it is the Master when she first appeared but thats all

ThymeLord · 17/07/2017 21:35

I'm pleased. I liked her in Broadchurch and thought she was funny in Attack the Block.

I am wearily disgusted by the reaction. Time travelling 900 year old alien with two hearts? Fine. Regenerates into a woman? NOOOO, I'm never watching again! I also don't remember the tabloids digging out buddy pics of David Tennant or Matt Smith. Misogyny 101.

ThymeLord · 17/07/2017 21:35

Nudey not buddy 🤔

FerretsAreFeminists · 17/07/2017 21:49

I'm a bit confused about all the outrage surrounding this tbh.

Dr Who is an alien who can regenerate as anything and I'm pretty sure it's been mentioned previously that it's possible for them to change sex when they regenerate. So what exactly is the problem with Dr Who regenerating as a woman? Surely it's far more realistic for the doctor to return as a woman at some point given the universe and story line that's already been laid out? In fact it would be highly unrealistic and unlikely for the doctor to constantly regenerate as a man.

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 17/07/2017 22:20

I don't know who Jodie Whittaker is. I didn't watch Briadchurch. Her face looks vaguely familiar from something but she looks a bit bland.

Michelle Gomez on the other hand is such a strong character and had a track record of playing interesting but barking mad characters. Missy was wonderful.

GinIsIn · 17/07/2017 22:25

2 hearts and infinite regeneration? Sure. NO PENIS?! OUTRAGE!!!! Confused

kittensarecute · 17/07/2017 22:29

I'm a member of the Gallifrey base forum and some of the sexist comments on there are disgusting. I'm really pleased they've cast a woman and I think she's going to be great. And I would have had no problem with them casting a man again either.

I wouldn't have minded Michelle Gomez being the Doctor though, I know she's Missy but they could have worked around it.

DameDeDoubtance · 18/07/2017 06:56

Thrilled.

But woman, it's Doctor Who, not Dr! Tsk, Tsk Smile

YetAnotherSpartacus · 18/07/2017 08:07

Does anyone else remember some time ago in the older Dr Who series that there was a rumour that the Dr would be a woman and the outcry was so bad they changed their minds? I remember this but no one else does and not being a fan I can't remember the specifics.

FluffyMcCloud · 18/07/2017 08:11

I love Doctor Who and will wait and see how the new Doctor fares. I'm not excited about it being any kind of feminist victory though.

Camomila · 18/07/2017 08:13

I'm a big Dr Who fan and I'm very excited, especially seeing as I haven't seen Broadchurch so I have no idea what to expect.

Funnily enough everyone I've spoken to who also likes Dr Who thought the same - and also hadn't seen Broadchurch.

I think they have been testing the waters for some time. Obviously the BBC wanted to do it, but wouldn't want to ruin their viewing figures.
On the Doctor Who facebook pages I am on, there are some very vocal women who say the show is ruined for them, so it's not all "the usual suspects".

Syc4moreTrees · 18/07/2017 10:59

I think she might have a good crack at it, but I think calling it a triumph for feminism is probably a bit much. I'll be interested to see how they explain him suddenly taking on a female form though.

AssassinatedBeauty · 18/07/2017 11:11

That's easy, he's an alien that can regenerate a whole body which is different from the previous one. It's been mentioned for a while now that timelord regenerated bodies can be male or female. The other time lord, The Master/Missy, has been a woman for a while now without excessive fuss.

deydododatdodontdeydo · 18/07/2017 11:36

Yep, they've done it already.
OK, they didn't mention it for the previous 50 years, but it's not the first time in the show's history revelations like this have come from nowhere.
They had to fiction themselves out of the "only 12 regenerations" trap they set for themselves years ago.

TiggyD · 18/07/2017 12:03

Been "done" before.
