I decided to try a moon cup thinginy this month. All was fine it said steralise before use so I put it in the dishwasher figured it was ok as it was new. Tried it last night after leaking through tampax super the night before woke up this morning no leakage great after trickerly trying to remove it ...that little stub really isn't long enough or at least not when you've had four children and twins. I finally remove it and it was almost full.....Wierdly a satisfying feeling ...have it in my fingers when I'm overcome by this sneeze cough splitter thing my entire en suite looked like someone had been massacred good job it's fully tiled took me fifteen minutes to clean up. I found it comfortable to wear and no Leakage unless you include me throwing it over the door and wall how have other peeps found it and how long does one last

I bought one 4 years back tried it out and it was a v tricky to get in but getting it out was a nightmare and thought I'd have to go to A&E in the end. Never touched it after that. Fast forward to last month and there was some thread on here saying how great they are so I think ok give it a second go and with a few goes can now get it in and out within 2/3 minutes so a vast improvement. Bit annoyed at myself for giving up when I bought it now.

Used it partly with Tampax this month and ok so far but was too scared to use it on a 'bad' day as the leak stories are scary about covering clothes and the idea of that happening at work is not appealing...

Does anyone use their cup 24/7 all month round?

SpaghettiAndMeatballs · 12/07/2017 09:13

I use mine if I'm at home, or only popping out, because I like to be able to rinse it and I have a bidet just an arm's length away when I'm at home. The idea of having to muck about with loo roll and putting it back in, or carrying it out a cubicle to a sink doesn't appeal at all.

On heavy days I put a thin pad on too - just in case of leakage, and it has saved me a couple of times.

FlorenceLyons · 12/07/2017 10:55

My 14 year old dd and I both use one (well, two Grin) pretty much exclusively. Neither of us have hugely heavy periods, so generally only have to empty it twice on heavier days and once on lighter days.

They last for years. I've been using mine for about 10 years, and I think I've only replaced it once (and that's because I ruined it by sterilising it in a pan of boiling water which I accidentally left to boil dry ShockGrin).

IndominusRex · 12/07/2017 11:14

Switched to one about 10 years ago and never looked back. One of the best things I've ever bought.

PippaFawcett · 12/07/2017 11:18

Thanks for the reminder! I have got one but I have never tried it. I will dig it out and give it a go as I read you should try to position it when you aren't on your period.

SpaghettiAndMeatballs · 12/07/2017 12:54

The getting it in was fine - it kinda popped into place behind the bone. Getting out the first time was mayhem....

Got the hang of it now.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 12/07/2017 12:58

I've used one for about 13 years, was just thinking about replacing it the other day.

No leaks, can change on a public loo without ever getting in a mess, LOVE it!

breakabletoy · 12/07/2017 13:04

Fiddly at first, but they do get easier the longer you use them. I have heavy periods and I use a cup exclusively. No leaking, but I'm pretty good at judging how long I can go before emptying it.

I've had mine since 2009. I wouldn't be without it.

Placebogirl · 12/07/2017 13:11

I use one, on year 7 now. I have ridiculously heavy periods and still have to empty about once every 4-6 hours on my first two days (as soon as I am done nursing, I am going to get that seen to). I only leak if it is overfull. I don't rinse in public, just dump and wipe out with a bit of toilet paper. It doesn't need to be washed every time.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 12/07/2017 13:24

User asked, 'Does anyone use their cup 24/7 all month round?'

I just want to say, I don't think that would be a very good idea. I can't imagine it being good for vaginal health. I am fairly sure the instructions tell you to only use it when it's your period (though popping it in when your period's about to start is fine).

I love mine. Even at my heaviest times it never fills fast enough to need emptying except when I am going to the loo anyway, so the only times in 10 years of use when it's leaked have been when I've forgotten I had it in.

I haven't replaced mine in 10 years, though, and I'm wondering if I ought to. It would be sod's law for my menopause to start immediately if I did...

ooohsopink · 02/08/2017 21:06

I'm considering getting one - I can't use tampons any more as I am really susceptible to cystitis and tampons were making things worse.

Do mooncups 'rub' against the pubic bone as they are taken in and out?

Any advice gratefully received - they're not exactly cheap to experiment with so anyone who can share their experiences would be brilliant.

QuentinSummers · 02/08/2017 21:11

No they don't at all.

monkeysaymonkeydo · 02/08/2017 21:16

If it's in properly you can't even feel it. I did trim the stem slightly on mine though. I never use tampons now. Moon cup all the way!

namechange20050 · 02/08/2017 21:17

Love my mooncup! After having a baby I found tampons really uncomfortable (I had a section so I am unsure why this would be). Anyway... bought a mooncup & love it. I've been using it for about 6 months. So comfortable that I forget it's there. My tip to new mooncup users is to practice at the end of your period when flow is lighter and have a few tries of getting it in & out.

picklemepopcorn · 02/08/2017 21:21

In terms of replacing them, I've found that if you sterilise them by boiling, you have to replace it every time you let it boil dry. Grin
I don't bother anymore, it gets a good scrub and that's good enough.

AnneLovesGilbert · 02/08/2017 21:21

Best thing ever. I keep tampons in case I know I won't be able to clean it properly when I'm out and period is very heavy. But I hate them.

Mooncup is cleaner, means less pain, doesn't leak, doesn't give you that grim dry feeling, free after buying it and better for the planet.

Couldn't be without it.

RhinestoneCowgirl · 02/08/2017 21:21

Been using one for 5-6 yrs. After second baby was born tampons just didn't stay in anymore Blush

Now I'm used to it it's so much better than the alternatives

Henrythehoover · 02/08/2017 21:37

I tried one as tampons always leak and turned out it leaks too. I was so disappointed. I emailed them and they said that as I have a tilted womb that it won't work Sad

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 02/08/2017 21:38

I use a microwave steriliser box for mine, that I bought to do nipple shields when I was breastfeeding.

Pawpainting · 03/08/2017 05:58

I bought one 4 years back tried it out and it was a v tricky to get in but getting it out was a nightmare and thought I'd have to go to A&E in the end. Never touched it after that

This happened to me, tried it once and couldn't get it out, my DH had to extract it in the end Blush. I really like the idea of it though and I'm debating giving it another try.

Babieseverywhere · 03/08/2017 06:16

I use a dentures soaking box and store my clean mooncup in that. I sterling the mooncup with Milton in the case a couple of days before I need it and again fir a day after my period. So I can store it clean/dry.

Much prefer Milton to the boiling in a pan method...I would burn it ! Plus Milton keeps it spotless.

Babieseverywhere · 03/08/2017 06:18

If you are having trouble getting your mooncup out. Stand and put one leg up on the toilet seat and bear down. Next time place the mooncup lower.

ElfrideSwancourt · 03/08/2017 06:29

I also love my mooncup, and the best tip I had was to take it out when you are in the shower. I find this loads easier, and no worries about blood going everywhere. Even on my heaviest days I find morning and night is often enough to empty it - you don't need to empty it every time you go to the loo, unless you have really heavy flow.
I also use Milton and a denture box to clean mine.

OnlyHereForTheFeminists · 03/08/2017 07:17

I've used one for about 14 years. Replaced it once because I lost it, then bought the bigger size after giving birth. That one is now 7 years old and doesn't look much different to when I bought it so I guess they last for a long time.

I'd recommend cutting the stem as short as possible otherwise it's very irritating. It does mean that you have to push your fingers quite far in to get it out, but it's easy with a bit of practice.

duracellred · 03/08/2017 07:24

A really stupid question but how does a 'moon cup' work? Is it inserted internally or what?
