OK genuine question because I don't understand and would like to not being goady or owt

Maxine Walters Tweeted that she was disappointed that the period emojis didn't represent black women

Can someone explain how they don't because I'm at a loss at what she means but the it's been retweeted several times and several people replied agreeing I just don't understand?

Anyone able to enlighten me?

Is there a noun then? It all sounds a bit verby?

MilkTwoSugarsThanks · 28/05/2017 13:13

Grin I've been known to use the expression "bleeding like a slit pig"!

It is formal, I wouldn't use it myself. I just think it's stretching it a bit to accuse other women of failing to normalise periods because they're using euphemisms no better or worse than "period".

Except Aunt Flo or Mother Nature. They should be banned!

MilkTwoSugarsThanks · 28/05/2017 13:14

The noun is menses.

YetAnotherSpartacus · 28/05/2017 13:22

Ok ... I get menses even if I prefer on the rag :)

ChocChocPorridge · 28/05/2017 14:04

How about 'the curse' or 'time of the month' Grin

Yes. What is it with that whole 'eggcupful' nonsense. I use a menstrual cup these days (if I'm not planning on straying too far from the house - I don't really want to be mucking about washing it in communal sinks) - and I can categorically say that I produce a lot more than an eggcupful. Unless they're being technically accurate, and it's an egg cupful of blood, mixed with 4 more egg cupfuls of various other matter and liquids.

LiviaDrusillaAugusta · 28/05/2017 14:11

I prefer 'on the blob'

YetAnotherSpartacus · 28/05/2017 14:16

I'm actually somewhat nostalgic for mine :(

qumquat · 30/05/2017 10:48

Doesn't menses just mean 'monthly' though from the Latin for month? So it's no less euphemistic than period.

VestalVirgin · 30/05/2017 13:30

Fun fact: There are no non-euphemistic words for most genital-related things.

Penis is Latin for pen. Vagina is Latin for sheath.

If one wants to talk clearly, the only thing one can do is to use the best known euphemism, really.

Everyone knows what "menstruation" or "period" means, so as far as I am concerned, those two are equal.

YetAnotherSpartacus · 30/05/2017 13:36

I remember reading some trashy teen fic as a teen (well, obvs) and cracking up laughing when I realised that the Americans used 'period' for 'full stop'. Snigger.

MilkTwoSugarsThanks · 30/05/2017 13:49

I don't really disagree with you... but would you get arsey with people who use "vagina" for the whole area when that's not correct? After all, everyone knows what it means.

For many people "time of the month" is no more or less a euphemism than "period".

It's not the words/expressions used that's the problem, it's the arrogance of claiming to be "better" (for want of a better term) than others because you use correct terminology. If people are using "time of the month", "on the blob", "on the rag", "shark attack" etc they're talking about it, which can't be a bad thing.

I do think that hiding it behind twee emojis is a step backwards though.

One of my schoolfriends referred to "surfing the crimson tide" which sounds more fun.

M0stlyBowlingHedgehog · 01/06/2017 22:48

There was a bloody hilarious thread on here a few years ago with various phrases for periods - surfing the crimson tide was one I liked too, Illegitimate. But also one woman who, when asked by her DH if she fancied a shag, coyly replied "Arsenal are playing at home", only to have him give her a really puzzled look and say "No they're not, they're away at White Hart Lane tonight." I quite liked "shark week" too.
