www.independent.co.uk/life-style/gadgets-and-tech/news/theresa-may-internet-conservatives-government-a7744176.html

"The manifesto even suggests that the government might stop search engines like Google from directing people to pornographic websites. "We will put a responsibility on industry not to direct users – even unintentionally – to hate speech, pornography, or other sources of harm," the Conservatives write."

While I am confident of the response on this forum towards the pornographic element of this proposal, I am wondering what we all think of the 'not directed to hate-speech' part... Just think of all the feminists who have spoken out on the trans ideologies and subsequently been branded as 'hate-speakers' and transphobes...

Not sure why the link isn't working, but the part in question is quoted anyway.

I'm totally against it, I also don't see how it's at all enforceable.

Xenophile · 19/05/2017 18:37

As soon as stuff like this is put in place, someone works out a way around it. It's unworkable.

AfunaMbatata · 19/05/2017 18:40

Completely against it. Where will it end?

LuluLovesFruitcakes · 19/05/2017 18:43

As the pps have said;

It would never work.

And even if it did, where would it end?

WhereYouLeftIt · 19/05/2017 19:08

Who decides what is hate speech?

CruellaDeVilsEvilSister · 19/05/2017 19:09

Against it. Agree with the posters points above.

DJBaggySmalls · 19/05/2017 19:23

They dont know what they are doing with tech and its frightening.

I agree it's scary, the recent laws are terrifying in their naivety. You can almost hear the meetings that took place and the arrogance and ignorance of the people who advocated for these laws.

I am all for the under 18 thing but how the fuck would that work on a practical level? For example that police and crime commissioner who was crucified over her Tweets. Most places allow you to take stuff down anyway so she had the option of doing that, how will this be different? How the fuck do they intend to regulate people posting screen shots? What about people who lie about their age when they sign up (which I think is most people given that you need to be 13 to use most sites and kids have profiles at 7 and 8 now)?

DJBaggySmalls · 19/05/2017 21:42

I seriously wonder if they have anyone who knows what they are doing to advise them, or how they would pick them. They dont seem to realise this is exactly how China and N.Korea act.

DrDreReturns · 19/05/2017 21:47

What the hell do they mean by 'other sources of harm?' If something isn't illegal you should be able to access it via a search engine imo. Also as pps have said anything like this is unworkable and unenforceable. I bet they didn't consult with anyone who knew what they were talking about before writing that bit of the manifesto.
