The other day I was in a pub and for the toilet door signs there was cartoons drawn on which vaguely resembled a person on each door with thought bubbles. The male toilet the thought bubble said football and the female toilet said shopping.
I came back tommy table and said "have you seen the doors it's awful, I think about things other than shooing, in fact I hate shopping". My male friend said abruptly and annoyed "I don't like football but I wouldn't get upset about it" then my female friend sniggered. My DP said oh it's only a joke.
But I felt like I was told to shut up as it didn't affect the male therefore you female mustn't be upset by it or even make it an issue.
I think I get so downtrodden by friends surrounding my thoughts on feminism.
Am I being hypersensitive to equality? Thoughts please?

Yes, agree - that's just foul.

Datun I'm absolutely not saying it's not an isolated issue and agree the evidence of sexist choices and stereotyping, decor- and otherwise are everywhere.

There's a horrible 'arty' black and white photo in my local Costa depicting a man with his hand clamped round the back of a woman's neck as they walk together, supposedly romantically..(no-one has emailed me back yet about that one).

I think part of the problem is the fact this stuff isn't' challenged and ridiculed as portraying anachronistic stereotypes. As OP's friends demonstrate, though, it's just not seen as a big deal by most people, as they've been conditioned to believe that sexism is fine (and speaking out about it makes you one of those extreme feminist types..).

It's not a chain pub. Very rural. The pictures looked like they were drawn on by the owners. If you see what I mean. As though they had no signs so drew them on.
