Not a journo, I promise! Trying to figure out where I "sit" in the feminist community - I think I am a liberal feminist, but, as I said, trying to work out where I sit in terms of the views of others.

I'm a radical feminist. I started off as a liberal feminist, wanting equality.
This graphic shows why I'm now a radical feminist. the first panel shows society as it is now, the second is the solution offered by liberal feminism.
The third panel is the solution offered by radical feminism. It uses lateral thinking to remove the problem entirely.

Theres an online test you can take;

If you identify as a feminist, what type of feminist do you identify as and why?
QuentinSummers · 08/05/2017 18:31

Currently I identify as radfem but I am not sure I really am that radical in the traditional sense. I'm very analytical and so the class analysis appeals to me.
The third wave is not attractive to me as a) I refuse to call a movement that prioritises the needs of any men feminism no matter how oppressed those men might be b) I don't think any choice a woman makes us a feminist choice. Some actions can be damaging to women as a class e.g. prostitution.
So yeah. I'm a SWERFing TERF I'm I guess Grin

namechange20050 · 08/05/2017 18:40

That test was interesting! I'm a liberal feminist. And the test results concurred. Though I've learnt from mumsnet that I'm not a real feminist at all due to having plastic surgery and being a SAHM!

QuentinSummers · 08/05/2017 18:51

I've never yet seen a post suggesting MN feminists have an issue with either of those things namechange. I think it's a bit of a myth

ifeelcraptonight · 08/05/2017 18:53

I did the test - thank you for the link.

It said I'm a liberal feminist.

Radical was top but only just 44%

Then women of colour at 43%

Then liberal at 40%

I think it means i am confused

NoLoveofMine · 08/05/2017 19:31

I'm a MAWF.

A Men Aren't Women Feminist.

I will do the test later on; I'd usually just say "feminist" but given the centring of trans issues in feminism these days I'd probably be a radfem.

AnotherSpartacus · 08/05/2017 19:45

By current standards I think I'm a radical feminist. I'm the right age for the third wave but have much more in common with the second.

I can't stand the idea that any choice a woman makes is a feminist choice, because she makes it. I'm politically libertarian enough to believe that people have the right to make all sorts of choices that I strongly disagree with, but if the word 'feminism' means anything at all, it can't be applied to the choosy-choice stuff. Sometimes I make choices that aren't feminist, because it's easier to get by that way, but at least I recognise them for what they are.

So, yeah, I'm a radical feminist. Not the fun kind. Also a TERF.

zen1 · 08/05/2017 19:47

I would have said radfem. I also took the test and radfem came out top at 46%.

Elanetical · 08/05/2017 20:03

I'm not sure what kind of feminist I am. A cross one, mostly. And also a MAWF, like NoLove.

SailAwayWithMeHoney · 08/05/2017 20:04

I took the test -

Libfem 45%
WOC 43%
Socialist fem 41%
Radfem 40%

I think that means I'm confused and don't know what kind of feminist I am Confused

explodingkittens · 08/05/2017 20:10

Radical feminist, apparently. Because I have this odd, old-fashioned notion that biology is an actual thing.

WhenSheWasBadSheWasHorrid · 08/05/2017 20:19

I did that test a while ago. I'm a Lib Fem.

Had an interesting mn chat with another mumsnetter. She identifies as rad. It was quite odd things that I looked at as being liberal feminist acts she saw as radical acts. Made me realise there's not many differences between various feminists.

Branleuse · 08/05/2017 20:21

liberal feminist

Is second wave those of us who were 'radfems' in the 70s?

Good old days.

QuentinSummers · 08/05/2017 20:25

Just found this on Google, I found it interesting (about intersectional feminism)

www.areomagazine.com/2017/02/15/the-problem-with-intersectional-feminism/

Crunchyside · 08/05/2017 20:38

I took the test and came up with Liberal Feminist.

However, before doing this test I would simply describe myself as a "feminist", not a particular flavour of feminist!

Some of the statements in that test seemed really odd to me. I wasn't sure why it repeated so much about 'romantic love' and capitalism. Don't get me wrong, I definitely identify more as a socialist than a capitalist but I don't think we can blame capitalism for patriarchy - lots of different types of societies throughout history and around the world have oppressed women and capitalism seems to be a side effect at best, not a cause!

Also the romantic love bit seems untrue to me as well - it's not just men and women that fall in love, what about lesbian and gay love, surely that's not just a construct for oppressing women?! Doesn't make sense to me. Same goes for marriage - yes, of course the institution of marriage can be a way of oppressing women, but there's nothing inherently oppressive about the concept of two people committing to eachother legally and spiritually for the rest of their life.

Xenophile · 08/05/2017 22:14

I am a grumpy feminist. Probably 2nd wave.

Namechange, that's utter rubbish btw, go and have plastic surgery, be a SAHM, no one's going to tell you you can't or shouldn't. All they might to is make you think about your choices and whether they're made in a vacuum. Which they aren't.

TinyRick · 09/05/2017 02:23

2nd Wave/Rad Fem

Big ol' bigoted Terf and Swerf Grin

Tartle · 09/05/2017 08:40

I don't 'identify' as a feminist. I reject all of this identity bollocks. I am a woman, I believe in the patriarchy and I think that a radical feminist analysis is the best way of understanding and fighting it.

I don't always agree with all rad fem writings and I don't always behave in ways that are true to my ideals but I try.

SaskiaRembrandtWasFramed · 09/05/2017 08:45

I took the test and got socialist feminist, which sounds about right.

That's a good point Tartle.

I'm not an academic feminist, although I find some of the more academic analyses of the issues women face to be helpful in understanding them and sorting out my own thoughts. So the "types" of feminism don't really resonate for me in terms of defining my own feminism.

I can see why the distinction exists between variants, but it only helps me a little bit. Many paths can lead to the same place, there is no such thing as a perfect implementation of change.

I am a feminist because I'm female and I think it's grossly unfair that males get more than their fair share and females suffer as a result. Which makes me very angry, more so now I have daughters.

0hCrepe · 09/05/2017 09:34

I don't know. I almost don't want to do the link because I don't want to be told what I am.
I believe women are superior to men emotionally, intellectually, physically, socially, visually and spiritually.
I think men are aware of this and are in deep denial which is why there has been the historical struggle to oppress us. I feel this is driven and maintained by their inflated egos and physical strength. They also have strengths in building etc. If they didn't want to have sex with women so much they'd probably have all killed each other and us by now. Many are trying to still.
The world would be much better run by women but it is the men who seek power and validation by being in charge.
