Philogynist. Wow.

I consider myself a fairly well educated and well read person. I have just, as a result of something I have read on mumsnet, looked up this term. I am astonished that I have never in all my years come across it. Now I know what it means I just want to weep. Misogynist - yes - I knew what that meant.

What does it mean......sounds like someone who is disparaging of philanthropists Grin

DoesAnyoneReadTheseThings · 05/05/2017 02:41

I thought it was people who were disparaging of people called Phil Grin

It's 'someone who likes or admires women' Hmm

StillHungryy · 05/05/2017 02:42

Maybe because it's the default or the considered default that people inherently like or at least are ambivalent to people. Nobody in rational thinking is going to accuse or call somebody a philogynist.

Person 1: I really like women
Person 2: you dirty philogynist you!

DoesAnyoneReadTheseThings · 05/05/2017 02:52

Is there a male equivalent? I can't find one.

DJBaggySmalls · 05/05/2017 03:01

DoesAnyoneReadTheseThings Philandry and misandry are the equivalent terms.

I'd heard of those but not philogyny. It had never occurred to me it might exist. Spell check hasnt heard of it either.

DoesAnyoneReadTheseThings · 05/05/2017 03:13

Yes, I know that. I'm asking if there is a male equivalent to philogynist, which is the topic being discussed.

DJBaggySmalls · 05/05/2017 03:16

I dont understand your answer. its in my post.
Philandry is the equivalent of philogyny.

DoesAnyoneReadTheseThings · 05/05/2017 03:20

Sorry, maybe I wasn't clear. Philandry is 'the fondness, love or admiration of men' what would one person with that 'fondness, love or admiration' be called?

I've found the answer now. It's 'philandrist'

Dervel · 05/05/2017 03:21

mansplain phile is one of the ancient Greek words for love so philandry would be the male equivilant. Philanthrope is a lover of people. Philosophy is a lover of wisdom. I've always found it interesting wisdom is a woman's name...

GrommitsEarsHurt · 05/05/2017 09:46

So does that mean I can say that whilst single, I was a great Philogynist, particularly after many glasses of wine? Grin
