Does anyone know of any good books for pre-school girls? I'm looking for books where the main character is female and not depicted as a princess or a girl who needs rescuing by a prince or some other stereotype. Most of the books I have found seem to have male leads. Even if it's a story with animals, the animals are depicted as men (Peter Rabbit, Spot the dog). I want to start giving DD some positive role models. So I would be very grateful for any recommendations. Thanks!

The Princess Who Had No Kingdom is a favorite for us, beautiful illustrations as well. Also, as above - Paperbag Princess, Rosie Revere.

Everyone seems to love Charlie and Lola as well.

Princess Smarty Pants by Bebette Cole.

Lovely thread - thank you!! I've just spent the witching hour ordering some on eBay!

The Blue Kangeroo series was thoroughly enjoyed in our house.

Lauren Child has done a version of Goldilocks and The Princess and the Pea which are lovely.

The Anna Hibiscus stories are lovely too about a little girl growing up in Africa.

The BFG and Matilda by Roald Dahl and The Worst Witch series - I think you can try these with younger children. My four year old is a fan.

The classics like the Secret Garden, Little Women, The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe and Little House on the Prarie for when they're older??

Also, I LOVED the American Girl series when I was younger.

The Sophie series by Dick King Smith. There are about 5 of them, slim novels rather than picture books. Sophie grows up from 4-7 in the books. She wants to be a farmer (rather annoyingly a “lady farmer”), she has older twin brothers and a penchant for mud and insects. She has no patience for clean and tidy children!

Mog. All the books, except the book that doesn't exist. Also, When Hitler Stole Pink Rabbit.

Aww. I know this is an old thread but it's lovely.

The Winnie the witch books. Winnie has hairy legs and isn’t afraid to flaunt them at the beach. She’s ace.
