Came across this on FB and thought it was really interesting: timelessvie.wordpress.com/2017/04/24/how-mormons-network-marketing-social-media-combine-to-sell-women-a-false-dream/

I've always thought they were a mug's game but never realised the Utah origins. Interesting approaching them from a feminist perspective

"And I read so many posts on here from women saying that their partners are pressuring them to go back to work and this feeds into it."

YY Jiggly Tuff.

Same thing happened with an old school friend of mine. Her DH faffed about deciding what he wanted to do. He decided he wanted to be self employed and as they still dont earn a great deal she started doing Younique. Before that she had a couple of interviews for retail work but didnt get the job. It seemed to me that some of it was down to him wanting his own way. They have a child who is under 5 I think she was feeling the pressure because what he chose to do doesnt earn enough.
She didnt work for a while before all this because she was caring for an elderly relative. Which he knew when they met but i do remember her telling me several years ago while she was still caring that he was "suggesting" she get a part time job then even though there is no way she could have done.

I'm so glad someone has managed to write such an articulate article about this.
It's been playing on my mind a lot since reading the mumsnet threads on MLMs.

There is a huge need for a feminist battle against MLMs. There are so many different aspects of them we should be angry about. there is a horrible quiet exploitation of so many women going on, with all the money scammed of them flowing back to Utah. Yet the government is just turning a blind eye. Indeed some job centres have even advertised MLM "opportunities". I guess it keeps unemployment figures down, so it doesn't matter if lots of women are being exploited Hmm

Its bizarre that women who have a young baby are pressured to give that baby to another women to look after and go back to work to earn two wages. One for her and one for the woman that she pays.
Women that want to choose shorter hours at work and more time with their children receive nasty comments on social media, including Mumsnet.

As do women that don't.

lastuseraccount123 · 20/05/2017 21:44

Hi everyone, I just wanted to stop by and thank you all for reading the blog and the post - I wrote it.

Our latest tactic is we've started a petition to create a Do Not Contact List for the MLM industry - a list women could join, like a Do Not Call list for telemarketers, saying that they don't want to be approached or stealth recruited by network marketers. the petition is here:

Thank you so much for sharing this. It completely is a feminist issue and I daresay one of the reasons it isn't being taken seriously is because the majority of people who become sellers are women. When my kids were tiny I was SO lonely during the day, I'm sure if someone had approached me I'd have leapt at the chance to become a 'bot'.

It Works! is huge un Utah. They prey on young women.

Their top product is a body wrap that doesnt work and it costs $95 for a box of 4. You have to use the wraps every 3 days. So that lasts less than 2 weeks. Or you can sign up to loyal customer and get them for $59. To get that join for 3 months minimum and pay membership fees and expensive postage.

They do a cellulite gel that costs $70 ffs. Its ingredients are no better than nivea cellulite gel which costs £10.

Huge emphasis on being a good "momma" and staying home.......

FreeNiki · 10/06/2017 02:55

It works seems to be spreading over here.

The name is the biggest misnomer because they dont work.

You cannot lose inches permanently by sticking a wrap to your skin or burn fat with pills.

lastuseraccount123 · 10/06/2017 19:28

It works has evangelical christian owners, but that aspect is well hidden until you get higher up in the pyramid. There's a lot of prayer etc at their events. Definitely v. conservative.

Anyway, I stopped by to ask for help. we are at 104 sigs on our petition, which is great, but my goal is at least 1,000. Can anyone help?

FreeNiki · 11/06/2017 11:32

I dont understand these schemes. Their products are eye wateringly expensive and I dont understand how most people can afford to buy them.

Their products are more expensive than brands like Clarins and you can buy their supplements cheaply in a chemist when they charge nearly $100 for them.

Oh for the day when they all collapse.
