I wish they would come and represent the whole UK. Great social policies overall AND Nicola sturgeon seems like a proper adult politician unlike that waste of space Corbyn.
Well done the SNP.

Sorry, still loathe Sturgeon and the SNP. This makes them marginally less odious. You are welcome to her.

QuentinSummers · 18/03/2017 00:00

lass I knew you would have something to say about it! I don't know if she gets reported differently in Scotland to England. We need a progressive socialist party I England and we don't have one so the SNP appeal to me.
A political party standing behind the Nordic model despite the "whorephobia"/SWERF trendy bullshit is amazing and I admire it

Why do you dislike her so much? (Genuine not snarky. Longstanding NC poster)

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 18/03/2017 00:30

Her only goal is independence at any price.

The SNP do not use the powers they already have as it's far easier to blame Westminster than actually do anything themselves. They fan the flames of a certain way of thinking by some in Scotland that we are always so terribly hard done by.

Sturgeon and Salmond lied during the last referendum about having a legal opinion that Scotland could join the EU.

Her current posturing about having a second one is hugely divisive and damaging. It's about her ego- nothing else.

We don't generally talk about politics in my open plan office but when she made the announcement the young assistants were shocked and openly talking about it. Brexit felt like a cloud, but now, well not so sure, life, trade , business goes on. Sturgeon's behaviour , threatening another referendum ,is just a horrible cloud of black despair.

Her charmless and graceless behaviour immediately after the 2014 referendum made it obvious she had contempt for the democratic process.

The legislation coming out of Holyrood is frequently unintelligible, rushed through and lacking in detail. Huge quantities only work with statutory instruments which are not scrutinised. I will not give specific examples but the legislation affecting my sector is a mess.

I have always loathed the SNP. The first ever time I voted happened to be the first devolution referendum which was not won. I voted No in that and the second one and no in the independence referendum and will vote No again.

So far as being socialist , I don't particularly want a socialist government. I was very left wing when I voted No in 1979. I'm not now. I frequently see on anti SNP threads statements that they are not socialist.

RJnomore1 · 18/03/2017 00:33

Come and live in Scotland. Lovely policies with no support to implement them. Difficult decisions farmed out to councils.

I'd support the Nordic model too.

She's a bitter disappointment.

MercyMyJewels · 18/03/2017 00:35

Ok Lass, understood and that's quite a visceral hatred

Can we address the Nordic model?

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 18/03/2017 00:37

Oh of course I support the Nordic model. Still won't make me think better of Sturgeon.

I don't think those outwith Scotland understand how much she is disliked.

RJnomore1 · 18/03/2017 00:37

Got to admit she's better than Corbin. Not as good as Ruth Davidson.

The Tracy ulman show version is hilarious

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 18/03/2017 00:39

Can we address the Nordic model?

Do we need to ? It crops up often enough. Is there more to say than "yes, way to go"?

MercyMyJewels · 18/03/2017 01:00

Oh god, what fun

MercyMyJewels · 18/03/2017 01:01

And with the word 'outwith'.

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 18/03/2017 01:13

I'm not sure what your point is on either of the last 2 posts.

The Nordic model meets with almost unanimous approval on FWR, including from me. I really can't think of anything more to say about it.

"Outwith" is a Scottish expression, often but not always, legal.

I'm saddened that " there anent" is no longer used. I suppose I could say re the Nordic model, I can't think of anything more to say, there anent, than what has been eloquently said in the past.

MercyMyJewels · 18/03/2017 01:20

Yea, whateffer

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 18/03/2017 01:33

Well that added a lot.Mercy Why don't you actually write something about the Nordic model rather than snide comments? The OP asked why I dislike Sturgeon - I answered.

I approve of the Nordic model. Particularly as there have been calls in the past in Scotland to legalise prostitution/ brothels (the late and remarkable Margo Macdonald misguidedly did so)

The Independent msp Jean Urquhart seemed to be headed down that way too.

And let's not forget a previous private bill to ban the buying of sex introduced by Labour msp Rhoda Grant was blocked by an SNP 3 line whip So I'm not inclined to give Sturgeon much credit now.

RJnomore1 · 18/03/2017 01:38

Margo tried Bd I like Jean urquhart too I have evidence to a group she chaired once.

I'm not sure who is currently sticking up for women despite three female leaders. Can't help but think nic is doing a thatcher pulling the ladder up behind her.

Though swinney is an impressive man and politician even though I often disagree with him.

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 18/03/2017 01:47

I had a lot of respect for Margo although I didn't agree with a lot of her politics.

I responded to the Jean Urquhart consultation, which seems to have been dropped.

Here's a link about the SNP's previous take on the subject.

PoochSmooch · 18/03/2017 08:00

I agree with Lass' analysis of Sturgeon (am Scottish, though live abroad). Snaps to them for going in the right direction with the Nordic Model, but it doesn't make me like her/them any more. They've budged up a couple of centimetres from the very low regard I hold them in.

I'm not convinced about the credentials of genuine socialism that they wave around so much, either. There's a great diversity within the party, and a lot of them only converge politically on the issue of independence. They are canny at refusing to take action they don't want to take and then blaming Westminster.

M0stlyBowlingHedgehog · 18/03/2017 08:11

Absolutely the right direction with the Nordic model - well done them.

But with Lass and Pooch (I'm another expat Scot here) on having severe reservations about Sturgeon.

I may join the SNP. I'm so glad they have looked at the evidence rather than at propaganda from the pimp lobby

Evidence they refused to look at 4 years ago. I suppose better late than never.

Iggi999 · 18/03/2017 10:43

I'm in Scotland, and one of the many folk here who do like her - numbers of SNP voters suggest I am not alone. Guess it depends what circles you move in.

OllyBJolly · 18/03/2017 11:00

I think you just have to look at the numbers attending the SNP conference today to see how well liked she is. I think she is great, and I'm in the Labour Party (an increasingly disillusioned member). I'm proud she represents Scotland. What stops me "leaping the fence" is that the SNP could achieve so much more than they have when they have such a strong mandate.

There is a growing appetite to look at Nordic models within Scotland and there's quite an exchange of ideas going on. I think one of the most attractive features of the Scottish Govt (of all parties) is their openness to learn from other countries. There are some quite interesting initiatives being developed for social care drawing from Dutch (Buurtzog model) and Sweden.

MercyMyJewels · 18/03/2017 11:02

I was a bit pissed last night Lass but I suspect we are not going to agree on Sturgeon and the SNP. I'm not a nationalist but certainly don't share your hatred for them. Never the twain shall meet and a' that

We can agree that it's good news about the Nordic model
