Sorry about another thread, there was nowhere to put this. But please do watch. But if you are in bed, beware, you will shout

In my observations there is a lot of ageism and misogyny as well as antifeminism going on in this no platforming frenzy at universities.

A lot of self-aggrandised, self-important upstart student union activists get a massive ego trip slamming the door in the face of women with the calibre and long list of actual achievements of Julie Bindel or Germaine Greer.

MorrisZapp · 18/03/2017 11:06

Liddle was brilliant. As for that young woman suggesting that the progressive movement was only in bud ten years ago, absolutely priceless. Her parents should stop her pocket money.

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 18/03/2017 11:13

I've watched it 3 times just for the comedy value Showed it to my husband as well.

That was laugh out loud- along with the banning the Mail etc on a journalist course.

Usui101
The NY Times article on intersectionality is very interesting. Thanks for posting

"A lot of self-aggrandised, self-important upstart student union activists get a massive ego trip slamming the door in the face of women with the calibre and long list of actual achievements of Julie Bindel or Germaine Greer."

I know, it's unbelievable - like some dystopian plit where everything turns upside down. The young take over power and we are left watching unable to say or do anything. We've all read the books and watched the movies.

DJBaggySmalls · 18/03/2017 12:37

Students pay for their education so consumerism.
They are talking about banning Germaine Greer and Julie Bindel! She lumps them with Milo Yiannopoulos, and she falsely claims Bindel charges high fees to speak,

GuardianLions · 18/03/2017 12:43

Thanks Usui I felt the NY times was better. The Guardian seemed very timid and pussy-footing - even misogynist/ageist/antifeminist in trying to ward off potential criticism in this comment: "Lifelong feminists, especially older ones, who express any reservations about eliding the experiences of trans and cis women are dismissed as bigoted ol’ bitches – and maybe some are."....
Ahem... excuse me? Throw older feminists under the bus why don't you? Does she actually support that language/stereotype about life-long feminists who paved the way for women?

Terfinator · 18/03/2017 12:44

Ha, yeah! It's like 'Children of the Corn'!

GuardianLions · 18/03/2017 12:49

Ha ha Bambambini & Terfinator so true

TalkingintheDark · 18/03/2017 14:13

Amy I really appreciate your voice on here as that of a young woman who is resisting the madness of your generation; you are a very welcome antidote to those excesses.

I sincerely hope you find some like-minded souls when you do get to Uni! It must be so hard to be the dissenting voice among your peers. I hope you can take some strength from knowing there are those of us, old gimmers that we are, who do respect your courage and strength of mind.

IAmAmy · 18/03/2017 14:23

Thank you very much TalkingintheDark! A couple of my good friends do agree with me, one in particular, but the "trans women are women, anyone who defines as a woman is one and if you disagree you're a bigot" view does seem to be the overriding one of my generation. If I voiced what I've said on here on this topic at my school's feminist society, for example, I'd probably be chucked out of it or given a ticking off if I was lucky. It really worries me how many are accepting it and shouting down women who see it for what it is, a danger to women.

It hugely helps being able to post here about it and I hope I'll find more women who are like minded on this subject at university when I get there!

TalkingintheDark · 18/03/2017 14:23

Totally agree about the bigoted ol' bitches comment in that article. It's extraordinary how the TRAs have managed to paint feminists as bigots in the first place, really, isn't it. How did they do it? I mean, lots of people have attacked feminists for lots of things in the past, but bigotry was hardly up there on our list of crimes in the Old Days, was it?

And yet it's been swallowed unquestioningly that feminists are some bearers of secret and immense privilege that we are unjustly clinging onto in the face of the warriors of progress who would wrest it from us.

If there's one thing I envy the TRAs for, it's their powers of PR. And their fucking enormously helpful serving of male privilege, of course.

But, that aside, it is nonetheless refreshing and perhaps a sign of hope that the Daily Transactivist Guardian is actually printing a piece like this in the first place. Could it really be that the debate is starting to open up?

MercyMyJewels · 18/03/2017 14:33

The Guardian does not want to be 'on the wrong side' of any so called progressive argument but I think the powers that be have had a little wobble about this one and are hedging their bets, hence articles like this being allowed. When they open unmoderated comments on such articles, that will be progress.

There really is no hope for this poor deluded soul - they need help - maybe we need to start re-educating as this sort of belief system is so harmful in respect of poor mental health outcomes

VeryBitchyRestingFace · 18/03/2017 16:23

I just blew approximately 250,000 brain cells listening to 06:19 seconds of that idiot.

Can you imagine what it must be like having to work with/listen to her? Hmm

WankingMonkey · 18/03/2017 16:33

The oppressed minority of straight white males who say they are lesbians.

You know...it used to be a joke among lads when I was at school. That they were lesbians as they loved girls so much. Now its meant to be accepted as reality that you get male lesbians, and that female lesbians are bigoted for refusing to suck their lady penis.

GuardianLions · 18/03/2017 16:36

very I think she is Borg. Many people have to work with and listen to her every day. Grin

TalkingintheDark · 18/03/2017 16:44

Glad to hear you've got RL allies Amy. It must be mind-boggling to be approaching your university education in this climate.

venusinscorpio · 18/03/2017 17:26

Amy, you are awesome. I'm glad you can discuss this with certain friends. I'm not sure I'd have been so brave to raise it at your age.

GuardianLions · 18/03/2017 17:28

Also Amy, I am glad to hear you have allies irl..
When I came to feminism myself I felt very much alone, constantly battling with everyone around me. Then I met older feminists and realised they knew their shit. Really, really knew their shit.
Not only that, I discovered that all the original thoughts I believed I had on the matter were already fully explored and documented and was part of a continuum.
But at that time older feminists were called hairy-legged, man-hating lesbians, [when young women were terrified of being unfuckable] rather than the lovely 'bigoted, transphobic, whorephobic, old, white, middle-classed TERF's' [now that young women are terrified of not being inclusive or 'with it'] they are called today.
Trying to put young women off of the deep knowledge and understanding of older feminists is nothing new - it's all part of antifeminism''s machinery.
So it's great you are here on mumsnet where you'll be chatting to feminists of all ages too.

IAmAmy · 19/03/2017 10:42

Thank you venus. I'm not brave enough to discuss it too openly I confess, but it is a relief to have close friends who agree and brilliant to see all the fantastic women here who do.

GuardianLions very much so about older feminists. That's another of my issues with this trans centred lib/"fun" feminist movement if that's the right word, many are so dismissive of older feminists and all their experience, all they've fought for. It's extremely arrogant to think someone of my age knows best (especially when their argument is just "trans women are real women you TERF").

TalkingintheDark very much so but I have hope things might be starting to shift ever so slightly with women like Jenni Murray and Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie speaking out. Also heartened that I talked to my mum about this very topic yesterday (after showing her the Daily Politics clip) and she agrees Grin
