Mexico City Policy - Trump

So Trump has signed back into law the MCP which prevents US dollars going to organizations that perform abortions. Even though none of the American dollars are spent on them. So an organization which funds birth control and sexual education with US money... if they use other money to fund abortions, will be defunded.

And he signed the executive order in a sea of men.

Are people so genuinely stupid that they can't understand that birth control and sex ed prevents abortions? Or is this the price of having Pence get him the Christian Right vote?

Utter scum.

I know it's a cheap point but I would imagine a great many US tax dollars have killed babies

It's cognitive dissonance.

OTOH, you can think all life is sacred and that's why abortion should be banned

OTOH - you have no issue with bombing people, supplying weapons to countries like Saudi, have no issue with the right to bear guns even though there have been a lot of massacres.

People tend to go quiet when you ask them how 1 view sits with their other view.

There isn't much project that this will change in the next 4 years at least.

So what is needed now is an organisation (or set of organisations) which offer the fundable elements of sexual and reproductive health care. Are there any such bodies?

I think it's important that those elements of care are not stalled, and that a way needs to be found that does the best possible work given the reality of what has happened.

I think the Dutch are taking the lead on this. Stepping up to the plate.

Agree this is short-sighted and a blow to women's rights and health. Let's just also remember while on the subject, and I'm sure it's been discussed on here before, that women in our own nation are also being refused access to abortion in N.I. and must pay for it themselves if they come to England. Whether it is imposed or not the maximum prison sentence in N.I. for illegal abortion is life imprisonment.

I was pleased to read that Nicola Sturgeon has been putting thought to this though.

this is devastating. I will never understand how people feel that they have right to dictate to others the choice of abortion. I understand even less how this can be one of the first priorities for a new president. I see this as a very targeted and personal attack on women. More devastating is the consequences for the millions of women who will no longer be able to benefit from the healthcare that these organisations will no longer be able to provide. Those women who never had the option to vote in the US elections will be seriously disadvantaged by this.

I didn't mean the Dutch initiative.

I meant an organisation which the US can fund

OlennasWimple · 02/02/2017 15:55

I genuinely wonder whether this was always on the plan for first week activity, or if it got brought forward as a big fuck you to the women who marched...

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 02/02/2017 16:30

It probably was already planned - the antichoice people are such an important part of his power base.

MrsTerryPratchett · 02/02/2017 16:32

I'm willing to bet Pence wanted it in the first week. Trump had to buy the religious right with something.

Not sure whether that would make it better or worse, TBH Sad

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 02/02/2017 17:45

Worse, I think. The anti-woman stuff isn't just him being an arsehole, it's a lot of powerful people behind him, and even if by some stroke of good luck the US somehow manages to get rid of him before the end of his term, what we get instead could easily be as bad or worse.
