Interesting comment on the stats.

I don't want to debate this just to flag it up for anyone who is interested.

But could it be that this now may be causing difficulties; in that as it is no longer classed as a MH condition MH support is no longer offered?

It may also cause difficulties as it may make it harder/more unlikely for a practitioner to explore comorbid mental health issues?

Absolutely, Elsa. If we're supposed to accept that being transgender is totally mentally healthy then what possible need could trans people have for specialist MH care?

Datun said "I wonder if that is indeed the case. Maybe the funding gets re-allocated"?

We don't know if there was any extra funding allocated anyway. I don't know whether MH support was originally only offered if the person wanted to socially/physically transition. Due to cuts now to Mental Health funding it seems unlikely that the only psychological support for those with GD is to ascertain whether the person is trans enough to receive the necessary medication/surgery to transition. My son was automatically discharged by CAMHS at the age of 16 with no notice, such are the funding restrictions. There really should be support for those who need it and who have GD but do not necessarily want to take hormones or have surgery.

During my time with Mermaids I didn't know of anyone in Elsa's position, i.e. their child had GD but didn't push for medical treatment. But that was probably because Mermaids only offered support to families pushing for treatment. Any parent who contacted Mermaids who didn't fully support their child's wishes to transition was either unsupported or persuaded that they must support the child; then the suicide/self harm stats were trotted out. DISCLAIMER: It is over two years since I left Mermaids, their status on this may have changed since then.

It comes to something when the massive cost and implications of surgery are a first choice option over therapy.

Glad Medicare have taken note of that study prawn. I don't know why it's not more widely known that surgery really isn't the best option. It would certainly have a beneficial knock on effect for people like tubas and Elsa.
