Is the new "self identifying" use of the term "woman" a form of cultural appropriation?

In that a previously oppressed group has had their group name taken by the oppressing group for their own use?

I might be wildly off mark, but was just musing.

Totally agree with you OP, it is absolutely cultural appropriation and I personally find it deeply offensive and hurtful.

But, you know, my feelz don't count because I'm only a woman and, thanks to the runaway success of feminism, not oppressed or discriminated against in any way at all, of course.

No misogyny to be seen here at all, no siree. In fact, no misogyny anywhere, because feminism has sorted all that out, hasn't it!

Uh....

Lovemypatio, I wouldn't worry about that. I'm sure you're fully equipped to hold your own. And we all learn so much from each other. Smile

I only signed up to mumsnet chat because I came across the feminist chat and the discussion on trans issue. I had no idea what was happening until a month ago, and thought I was alone with the confusion in my head. Since then I have been watching lots of you tube videos and finding blogs I had never heard of. I showed a few of the videos to my dd's dad, and explained the issues as well as I could and he was completely gobsmacked, just horrified at how this can potentially hurt women, he wanted to watch one video after another and talk about it as much as I did. I was really surprised and grateful to have someone to discuss it with because though I have posted lots of links on Facebook, all of the women I know seem to be away with the fairies and aren't concerned or interested at all. I struggle to explain the issues as clearly and eloquently as some on here, so I just post any good links I can find as my contribution. I have also been looking into feminism much more and I'm so glad I came across these threads and all you ladies, so thanks!

Yes it cultural appropriation. I hate having someone with a penis who has lived a life of white middle class male privilege tell me that the hardest part of being a woman is choosing clothes or walking in high heels .
