Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

I want to join a gender critical feminist group

Hi I've decided I want to talk to people in real life about feminism and meet more gender critical feminists like those I've met here at mumsnet, and get notifications about talks and lectures.

I don't know what to join though, after a bit of googling. The Fawcett Society statement on gender identity starts off OK then moves on to 'lived experience and 'inclusivity'.

I've drawn a bit of a blank now. Does any one have any advice please. London / south east area. Many thanks indeed.

Twatbadger... it is possible to follow pages anonymously on FB, just go to your own profile page, page likes list. Next to your likes, there's a little cog where you can change the privacy. You can set it to 'only me' or 'close friends' if you have such a list set up. Unfortunately, you can only do it by category, eg favorite music pages, tv progs pages, sports pages etc, not individual pages. To check the invisibility, click on 'view page as' & choose one of your friends. Bear in mind that if you like or comment on a 'controversial' post which is set to public or custom (globe/cog symbol), it may show up in your friends' newsfeeds.

Xenophile · 18/09/2016 22:46

Can I just suggest that, if you are going to comment on anything 'controversial' you think seriously about having a separate profile for that? Or that you are really rigid about putting people into groups on Facebook?

Like all male extremism, this can and will be used against you by it's proponents and while losing your job because some bloke has taken a dislike to you and doxed you might sound romantic, it's really not.

TwatbadgingCuntfuckery · 18/09/2016 22:46

VickyMirdle that's my worry about commenting. I have all my stuff set private - about, likes, pages, etc and don't post often but I like to engage with content and my anon FB account was removed :(

My RL name is easily found with my address on google and I'm concerned about some of the extremists (already been threatened on my anon twitter) out there.

There are fb groups but you will need someone irl to vouch for you.

I just saw there is a workshop event for radical femists who want to become active on Saturday in London. I can't link it but it's on radfem collective's fb page.

I haven't seen that WW, same source?

Lifejustbounces · 20/09/2016 11:37

So glad to see this thread! I might be going to the workshop on Sat (if I can summon the courage) but I'll definitely attend the talks. There is also a social weekend at some point.

Charliesierra - all the details are on their website (and possibly eventbrite too). They are doing several on the theme of religion over the winter.

WinchesterWoman · 20/09/2016 11:41

If it's anything like the workshops I've been to, they are a welcoming lot. Have a ball!

WinchesterWoman · 20/09/2016 13:42

Hurrah for us Grin

Great thank you. I hope if anyone does manage to pluck up the courage go, they will come back and tell us all about it. I can't go this weekend unfortunately, and sadly because I don't live near London it isn't feasible to go to the talks held in the evenings. I have contacted Chelt Fems though.

Lifejustbounces · 20/09/2016 19:37

I've bought a ticket now so definitely going. I'll report back. If anyone wants to come and hold my hand let me know.

EmpressKnowsWhereHerTowelIs · 20/09/2016 21:36

Good on you Life. Please do report back!

WinchesterWoman · 20/09/2016 21:40

Is that for this weekend? I'm just waiting to find out if I'm working on the talks for women and religion.

I will roll up one trouser leg and carry a Froot Shoot.

Grin Yes the workshop on Sat - I'll look out for you Grin
CharlieSierra · 21/09/2016 19:02

Oh I'm so envious, I hope you enjoy it.

soundsystem · 21/09/2016 20:00

Oh, the workshop on Saturday looks interesting. Thanks for the info. I might see if I can move some things around so I can go.

I'm a little bit nervous as it says it's "for radical feminists only" (which makes sense, obviously). I'm more radical than liberal, but do you think there will be a test?

WankingMonkey · 21/09/2016 21:39

I did not know where to put this as it belongs in pretty much every trans/gender/non-binary thread but I don't want to spam it all over and think this section probably has more people willing to spend a lot of time reading than, for example, AIBU. Just because this section is primarily for more important issues than 'omgz I just burnt a pizza'

So

aeon.co/essays/the-idea-that-gender-is-a-spectrum-is-a-new-gender-prison

It is the best piece of writing I have seen yet to describe the whole non-binary stuff we hear constantly now.

Also a totally wrapped up explanation of why 'cis' is total bollocks and does not actually exist.

It is very long, but well worth reading if you have the time and are even vaguely interested in all of this. Debating with myself if its worth putting it on another one of the trans threads or not :S

WinchesterWoman · 21/09/2016 22:15

Hi Life - I can't go this Saturday but I'm going on the 15th to the talk then. Enjoy the workshop :)

WankingMonkey perhaps start another and post it there. I shall read it tomorrow and will probably want to discuss!
