I thought it was a joke that trans people claimed it was offensive to say women had periods.

Apparently it was not a joke after all. The Twitter feed is dominated by this crap?

OP posts:
Brandnewiggi · 06/09/2016 18:12

I have just commented on this on another thread. It is madness. Transmen have periods I would accept, but "men" simply don't have them. It is odd to be on the side of those not being "PC" at this time of life, but what else can I do.

IBelieveTheEarthIsFlat · 06/09/2016 19:35

Yes, and no mention of the origin of the hashtag, which was about African girls who can't go to school and have to go outside the village when they are having their period. That's CisPrivilege

AverageGayLad · 06/09/2016 19:36

I'm a man. I certainly don't have periods Confused

Batteriesallgone · 06/09/2016 19:37

Why is it offensive? Confused

It's the dismantling of women as a class of person facing sex-based discrimination. Very anti-feminist.

Batteriesallgone · 06/09/2016 19:59

I'm sorry I don't have Twitter. I'm not getting it. How is it offensive to say women have periods?

Because transmen do? Because transwomen don't? Eh?

I'm just so confused. I don't have periods because I'm breastfeeding. Can't get more womanly than that. But I'm not offended by the statement 'women have periods' or reading into it that it means I'm not a woman.

I'm just Confused

OlennasWimple · 06/09/2016 20:00

Blimey, I've just been scrolling through Twitter....

IBelieveTheEarthIsFlat · 06/09/2016 20:18

It's offensive to transpeople because according to them, some men (transmen, who have identified as male but biologically female) have periods. (and can have babies and BF too obv)

But actually the twitter hashtag was about THIS:

www.theguardian.com/global-development-professionals-network/2014/may/28/menstruation-girls-education-uganda-sanitation?CMP=share_btn_tw

But no, it's transphobic to care about girls who have nothing, apparently

Batteriesallgone · 06/09/2016 20:22

Thanks for the clarification.

Surely there's ways for transmen to stop having periods. Like hysterectomy I'd have thought.

HermioneWeasley · 06/09/2016 20:26

The idea that anyone with access to social media would make this about them rather than the millions of women and girls who don't have access to toilets and San pro just shows what hideous, narcissistic twats they are

It's like me complaining my diamond shoes are too tight (they are BTW)

PerspicaciaTick · 06/09/2016 20:37

I saw this on Twitter too.
I am seething about it.
I can't find the words for why I am so cross - but it is connected with the fact that the people who are so quick to shout "transphobic" at the hashtag are so blinkered and have such a narrow perspective on the world that they choose to diminish women who have no access to sanpro and who are ostracised (literally, physically, not just made to feel a bit uncomfy for while) while they bleed.
Because nothing in the world is more important than reminding everyone about your feelings, even in face of other people's suffering.

PerspicaciaTick · 06/09/2016 20:40

It is as if they see a news report saying "Three women injured in car crash" and they feel the need to say "That's transphobic, transpeople are injured in crashes too - why aren't you talking about them". Despite the original article being about a specific group of women's experience of being in one specific car crash.

IBelieveTheEarthIsFlat · 06/09/2016 20:41

The point is, there are women in the world very much oppressed by the biological reality of their having periods. Much like all women used to.

But that's transphobic, according to the madness of twitter. twitter.com/hashtag/ifmenhadperiods

Again, turned into another trans thread. Fuck the African girls.

PerspicaciaTick · 06/09/2016 20:43

To be fair - it did start as a trans thread, it isn't as though it has been derailed.

HermioneWeasley · 06/09/2016 20:45

This is the point - women can't talk about anything to do with our actual lived experience without being told we're transphobic or "cissexist"

It's silencing and erasing (to use their language) and I am so fucked off by discussion that impacts half the world being derailed by 1%

IBelieveTheEarthIsFlat · 06/09/2016 20:46

I don't think so Pep. Why do you think that? It was all about the African girls yesterday. Actually there was another report which was of the same gist, I nearly posted it on here.

Soubriquet · 06/09/2016 20:47

I am so glad I don't have twitter

Or should that be twatter due to the anount of twats on there?

That's not transphobic. That's including everyone Grin

PerspicaciaTick · 06/09/2016 20:49

Because the actual OP says
"I thought it was a joke that trans people claimed it was offensive to say women had periods.

Apparently it was not a joke after all. The Twitter feed is dominated by this crap?"

The OP didn't start a thread discussing the issues facing menstruating women - she started a thread about trans derailment of the hashtag.

Batteriesallgone · 06/09/2016 20:50

This started as a trans thread though right? I didn't derail it? Blush

Still trying to get my head around the whole thing. Awful story about the African girls Sad

FeedMeAndTellMeImPretty · 06/09/2016 20:53

Who are those people on Twitter?! How can so many people just blatantly spout shit about men having periods? It's absolute lunacy.

I'm so bored of this now, seriously contemplating flouncing as MN has been utterly ruined with every other thread being trans-this and trans-that. Completely taking over every fucking discussion with this "what about the tranz?" bullshit.

I appreciate that all this has only been brought to my attention by MN, I don't see it in real life and I'm not on Twitter so otherwise it would be completely passing me by. But it is really bloody disturbing how quickly this has all escalated and it dominates everything. FFS it's MUMSNET not fucking TRANSNET!

Just ban me and put me out of my misery please MNHQ.

IBelieveTheEarthIsFlat · 06/09/2016 20:54

Soubriquet

You don't need to be a member of twitter, search #ifmenhadperiods on google and click on the twitter result.

Soubriquet · 06/09/2016 20:54

I clicked on the link up thread already.

I saw it all. Sickening really

Felascloak · 06/09/2016 21:17

Omg. I saw this gem "#IfMenHadPeriods is awfully cissexist. I know MANY men who not only have periods but give birth on a daily basis."
So not only can men now give birth, but they can birth a baby a day. It's amazing!

Iggi999 · 06/09/2016 22:05

There is also a boy who is 6 months pregnant (sic) posting about how transphobic this is on Twitter.
