BBC Gender Stereotyping

Grr.

BBC GBBO promotional photos released today.

All the male competitors mixing blue icing. All the female mixing pink icing.

It doesn't seem like a big deal, but really?

It's just a drip, drip, drip of stereotyping every day, everywhere we look. Blue for boys, pink for girls.

Even in a show that has done wonders for breaking down gender stereotypes in the past.

Rant over.

So they went and refilmed the whole animation again with new colours based on complaints? In one day?

SpeakNoWords · 16/08/2016 16:33

Which animation is it? I have only seen the still pictures.

Last season all the contestants had pink icing on the promo shots.

Oh, really? No , of course not!

It's all edited afterwards - the colours of their clothing, the bowls, icing etc all changed before publication.

That's why it pissed me off so much, the colours were deliberately added afterwards - chances are, when the photos were taken the icing was all the same colour!

ego. I don't think it's the power on MN but the BBC FB pages were deluged with comments so I wouldn't be surprised if it was pester power/public opinion that changed it.

Sorry but the old "head tilt" manoeuvre rarely enhances the strength of the argument.

It was sarcasm. And it wasn't directed at you, lass.

Xenophile · 16/08/2016 17:57

I wonder if it would be possible for the people who accuse women of "over thinking" everything because thinking too much might overheat our poor little minds? to put together a list of those things we're allowed to discuss.

In that way, we won't clutter up the feminist section of this forum with our obviously ridiculous analyses of the way that hundreds of small things make being a woman in society far more annoying and difficult than being a man is. (with the obvious exception to that universal rule)

I wonder if it's worth posting that on their Twitter page and asking them why they've chosen to represent the astronauts that way?

mobile.twitter.com/rhsschools

I would, but I don't do Twitter.

JacquettaWoodville · 16/08/2016 19:52

Good idea -they do plenty of school trips there and it's linked in with Tim Peake and their rocket seed project so very schools focussed.

I'm aware of both points. I still think it's a pointless cliché

That's okay. I think deliberate use of a cliché is a highly effective way to be ironically critical. But hey ho Grin

I'll be honest - I just can't get het up about pink icing for the women and blue for the men.

But the Apprentice's none sense where the split the teams into male and female really pisses me off.
