I thought a companion thread would be interesting.

Patriarchy.

MephistophelesApprentice · 27/07/2016 11:50

Y chromosome and a testosterone dominated development, with it's attendant impact on neurostructural phenomena.

JacquettaWoodville · 27/07/2016 14:31

A man is an adult human male.

BeyondBeyondBeyondBeyondBeyond · 27/07/2016 17:22

Cock and bollocks
and/or
A Y chromosome

vitaminC · 27/07/2016 17:32

A Y chromosome. No matter what other chromosomes they have, anyone with a Y chromosome is biologically male.

WilLiAmHerschel · 27/07/2016 19:08

Anyone who has facial hair, knows how to use a power tool or who is incapable of multi-tasking.

hazeyjane · 27/07/2016 19:12

Y chromosome and male genitalia.

BeyondBeyondBeyondBeyondBeyond · 27/07/2016 19:43

Spider-catching ability

MephistoMarley · 27/07/2016 19:44

Not a very interesting thread as I believe the answer is the same. Being of the male sex and being perceived as such by society at large.

BeyondBeyondBeyondBeyondBeyond · 27/07/2016 19:48

Peeing standing up

SwissWank · 27/07/2016 20:14

Snips and snails, and puppy dogs tails.

Nah, just kidding. Cock and balls. Every time.

SwissWank · 27/07/2016 20:15

*Also superior bin emptying abilities.

BeyondBeyondBeyondBeyondBeyond · 27/07/2016 20:16

Oo, and grasscutting abilities.

BeyondBeyondBeyondBeyondBeyond · 27/07/2016 20:16

Likes beer and burgers. Or maybe steak.

SwissWank · 27/07/2016 20:21

Scratches inappropriate places at inappropriate times.

Missgraeme · 27/07/2016 20:23

A man loving kids that he didn't make. Just because they are fab kids!
So strings
No fuss

SwissWank · 27/07/2016 20:37

That is definitely a thing men can do missgraeme although unfortunately a sizable percentage of penis and xy bearing men don't actually even take care of their own children. They are still men though.

(also you're in feminist theory and this is a response to another thread "what is a woman" which is a response to another thread over in the 'News' section. But the thread this based on discusses what women literally are. So xx chromosomes, breasts and a vagina or "identities" that you can choose to be.

BertrandRussell · 27/07/2016 20:58

So if I identify as a man does that make me a man?

OP posts:
AskBasil · 27/07/2016 22:10

Cock and Bollocks sounds like ejaculations. You know, like "stuff and nonsense!", but more vulgar.

BeyondBeyondBeyondBeyondBeyond · 28/07/2016 09:12

Bench pressing
Liking football/rugby/cricket/racing
Being the driver
Tshirt, jeans and trainers

BertrandRussell · 28/07/2016 20:39

Is that really what makes a man? How incredibly depressing.

OP posts:
BeyondBeyondBeyondBeyondBeyond · 28/07/2016 21:22

I guess my sarcasm isn't coming through, Bert Blush

BertrandRussell · 28/07/2016 22:54

I did wonder. But I don't think this is a time for sarcasm- sorry. I know I'm sounding like a "humourless feminist" but I think this is a critical time for gender politics- and we need to think seriously about this stuff. Because if we don't, we'll end up back where we started, with men calling the shots, and women just grabbing what they can around the margins. These are dangerous times.

OP posts:
SwissWank · 29/07/2016 09:31

Sarcasm was definitely coming through and I think it is exactly the right time for it. The point is the above things don't make a man and it is ridiculous to pretend they do.

Oscar Wilde can stuff it.

BertrandRussell · 29/07/2016 10:04

Yes- I do understand what sarcasm is!
