Dutch woman arrested in Qatar for being raped

Apparently she went to a hotel where alcohol can legally be served, her drink was drugged, and she was raped.

Now her rapist wants to marry her, in accordance with Islamic law, and she has been imprisoned for adultery.

This is the barbaric racist shithole where the next World Cup will be held.

Is rape even seen as a crime there?

MorrisZapp · 13/06/2016 13:29

Holy fucking crap.

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 13/06/2016 13:32

Yes it is but evidentially it will be very difficult to prove. This woman and this man engaged in sex. That fact is not disputed.

What is disputed is whether or not it was concensual. She says it wasn't - he says it was.

If she continued with her version , it went to trial and he is found not guilty of rape then both are guilty of having sex outwith marriage.

If I were her I'd plead "guilty" to having had sex , pay the fine and go home and hope his sentence is fully carried through.

Limer · 13/06/2016 13:49

Poor woman. I totally understand if she wants to get home and quietly deal with it all in her own time, but I hope she decides to publicise her story and spread the word about the crazy misogyny in this barbaric country.

From what I've read about other Islamistic countries, rape is considered a crime in theory, but the woman would have to bring like four male eyewitnesses with good reputation ... so, essentially, a situation that is unlikely to ever happen.

And then, the only benefit the proven rape would have for the woman is probably that she'd not be punished for adultery.
But she might still be forced to marry the rapist - seems to be common in Quatar - who then would not be punished since his crime was only ever considered a property crime against her father.

originalmavis · 13/06/2016 14:07

What a pile of crap.

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 13/06/2016 14:46

It would be nice if the Dutch football association issued a recommendation that no Dutch female or gay fans travel to the 2020 World Cup as their safety cannot be guaranteed.

It would be even better if the Dutch football association were to say they refuse to compete at all.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 13/06/2016 14:48

Are we expecting the Dutch football team to play there while this woman is still in prison? I suppose we are, but how obscene.

No, she's being deported.

VestalVirgin · 13/06/2016 15:03

You'd still expect some solidarity on her behalf, i.e. Dutch football team refusing to compete.

Or, in fact, all football teams from Europe refusing to compete.

WC qualifiers are being played at the moment so that's not an issue but some form of solidarity from the European football nations would be useful. Unless it is Argentina and Brazil the winner in 2020 is more than likely to be a European country.

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 13/06/2016 15:17

Sorry WC qualifiers are NOT being played at the moment.

PalmerViolet · 13/06/2016 16:19

Oh, now don't be silly, we all know that watching 22 millionaires, chasing a bag full of wind in their underwear is far more important than women not being raped.

originalmavis · 13/06/2016 16:27

And footballers have the best reputation for treatment of women and women' rights.

deydododatdodontdeydo · 13/06/2016 16:29

FIFA is hideously sexist from what I can see and probably the Dutch FA too.
Can't remember who it was, but one of the top people suggested women's football would be more popular if they wore sexier outfits.
I wouldn't expect any solidarity from any of them.
(Although they should do!).

VestalVirgin · 13/06/2016 16:33

I know, I know ... however, that doesn't stop me from expecting that they behave like decent human beings.

I know they won't. Still, they should. Or face the reality that they don't give a shit about women and thus do not deserve to have any women in their lives.

grimbletart · 13/06/2016 16:36

I see she has now been convicted

Some countries have the most awful laws.
I don't know why people go there, poor woman.

fitzbilly · 13/06/2016 16:53

This is why I hate Islam and think it is a terrible religion, it allows these people to behave in such an awful barbaric way, and allows the terrible mistreatment of women.

Disgusting.

originalmavis · 13/06/2016 17:33

It's not the region but the culture. A relatively modern religion can't trump few thousand years of women doing treated like chattel.

It's the culture of some countries to view women as whores, mums or servants.

CathemeralChild · 13/06/2016 17:38

She's on her way home. Her mother has issued a statement.

originalmavis · 13/06/2016 17:40

I wonder what the Qatari embassy address in London is... oh here it is on Google.

UptownFunk00 · 13/06/2016 18:17

Poor woman.

There's no explaining away the truly patriarchal religious views these countries have.

I will be boycotting the Olympics when they are held there - I can't believe the countries of the world would send their athletes there.
