Bluewater and Breitling- remove your offensive display now

Bluewater and Breitling watches think it is acceptable to have an overtly sexualised model of a woman with exaggerated nipples, astride a bomb, with her full gusset revealed...on display at a family shopping venue- to sell watches. This has no place in 2016. Please sign and share the petition to have it removed. The petition is on change.org. I guess just search for Bluewater or Breitling.

Do you think that objecting to a lazy and stupidly sexist window display is exactly the same as a scientist being hauled over the international internet coals due to wearing an ill advised t shirt whilst doing his job?

SlowFJH · 08/03/2016 06:07

It's in the same ballpark.

I object to the attitude of "I'm offended therefore you MUST"... Which makes feminists sound spookily similar to proponents of Sharia law who want to dictate what people should and shouldn't wear.

It's very early for a Godwins Law-esq whine.

DropYourSword · 08/03/2016 06:18

Haha. Has Slow been drinking?!

FreshwaterSelkie · 08/03/2016 06:18

I do hope the heady thrills of instructing feminists what to do and not do wears off soon for you, slow. It's quite tiresome, and nobody here needs your permission to decide what's important to them.

The point that you are so signally missing is the drip-drip-drip insidious representation of women's bodies as commodities used to sell shit, and how it makes us feel, and the complete legitimacy of protesting that in all its many and varied forms. Quite often alongside the "important" stuff like FGM, abortion, violence etc. We can do both, shock horror.

It's pretty easy to grasp the difference between Sharia law which wants to present women as less than human, by making rules to enforce that, and feminism, which wants to treat women as fully human, by shaping societal attitudes to achieve that.

Caprinihahahaha · 08/03/2016 06:22

Oh come on fresh, Slow is getting a Daily Mail on.
The whiny tone is new but several days posting about how it's such a non issue is a little oasis of humour.
I like Slow. All fired up about making sure people know it's not important.

seadragonusgiganticusmaximus · 08/03/2016 06:24

Fairly consistent with some of Breitling's other advertising:

Don't we all have absolutes or at least things we'd go a very long way to try and 'make' people do or not do Slow? If I came up to you and started flashing your small child and you couldn't get away you would, I presume, do everything in your power to make me stop and would likely find this offensive. This doesn't make you akin to someone wanting Sharia law however!

We say some things are acceptable, some are grey areas and some are unacceptable and we will try and stop them. As we don't agree dictating what to wear as in Sharia law is acceptable we believe we are right not to allow people to do it. You can have a different opinion but people will always need 'rights and wrongs' otherwise we'd live in a very strange world where you couldn't think anything as you'd have to accept (not just be open to) all opinions at all times, and your brain would melt.

Being offended means "resentful or annoyed, typically as a result of a perceived insult", so you can be offended and it means sod all, as there may be no insult anyway, but you can also be offended by something and that be more than valid as there's some great insult and problem there. Maybe don't take life cues solely from Stephen Fry in future.

FreshwaterSelkie · 08/03/2016 06:59

Acht, I suppose you're right, Capri. I might revert to pointing and laughing at Slow instead. Maybe he is Stephen Fry?

SlowFJH · 08/03/2016 20:05

I am OFFICIALLY OFFENDED now! The intertubes will experience a rage the likes of which they have never seen before!

PalmerViolet · 08/03/2016 20:09

Unlikely Selkie, at least Fry is amusing occasionally.

ABetaDad1 · 08/03/2016 20:15

I knew what this would be about before I opened the thread.

seadragon - you saved me the job of linking their TV adverts. I see them very often several times a day on a US financial news TV channel I watch.

They really do not make me want to buy a Breitling watch. I don't like the adverts and I think would be just as effective without the women in them. In fact, I would quite like to know more about say the history of Breitling, its connection to aviation, etc.

I am off to sign the petition.

LilacSpunkMonkey · 08/03/2016 20:18

Anyone else find it amusing that slow keeps bumping this thread despite not being at all bothered about the subject of discussion?

Anyone would think they were looking for an argument.

BarefootAcrossHotLegoPieces · 08/03/2016 20:34

I'd say I found it amusing, but Slow would probably read that as me saying I was agitated, annoyed and irked beyond measure, given her interpretations to date...

Caprinihahahaha · 08/03/2016 20:35

Slow is trying to be provocative. It's like watching a gorilla trying to tap dance.

Bless

Well said.
