Searched for this topic and was suprised not to find anything - Jess Phillips on Question Time this week deflects question on immigration and Cologne sex attacks by saying 'similar' crimes happen in Birmingham city centre every weekend. The guardian gives more info from her www.theguardian.com/world/2016/jan/29/labour-mp-jess-phillips-defends-remarks-about-cologne-sex-attacks

The attacks in Cologne appear to be organised via social media which is why so many were involved - it marks a tipping point towards the industrialisation of this sexually motivated criminal activity - allowing perpetrators to hide in a crowd and overwhelm the police.

I can't believe this does happen on any scale in Birmingham so why would a feminist such as Jess Phillips ignore this and instead focus on the facts that DV and sexual assaults happen in Britain already etc which misses the specific issue raised?

When we see a new brand of misogyny it is less acceptable than the shit we've been putting up with for years. Let's not pretend we don't have a heap of misogyny over here, but also lets not deny that the middle East is far far worse for women and the attitudes engrained in most men that include women being covered like gems isn't having a huge affect on attitudes overall.

The other day on the Calais solidarity page a man was posting about his wife not wanting to go without her hijab in a picture. (I have my own anti theist views on that alone) but he went on to say that his wife is precious and modest, and look what happens when women are not covered they get attacked like they did in Germany. This went completely unchallenged, instead everyone tried to help him get his wife to France without the rule of law required to uncover. Why are we so keen to erase human rights for the religious "rights" of some?

Having seen Jess Phillips on QT answering all the questions I think she is not the sharpest knife in the box. Engages mouth before brain.

Would anyone else care to go to the thread on the upcoming webchat with her and ask for an apology for her crass comments on Cologne NYE?
