Terrorism in Colorado Springs

PlaysWellWithOthers · 28/11/2015 10:29

Don't know how many people have read about this terrorist attack on a PP clinic in Colorado Springs?

Is it just me that thinks that the idea of "pro-life" people with firearms killing people is oxymoronic?

Why has no one described this obvious act of domestic terrorism as that?

There's been a lot of Tweets from anti-choice/anti-woman people supporting this terrorist. How do these people square the circle of which lives they are pro?

The way it's being reported is also interesting to me. I wonder if this man had had brown skin and been shouting pro daesh slogans, he would have been taken alive and have as much support from these people.

They like their heavily photoshopped images of full term foetuses.

They like the idea of their wives chastely holding clean and powdered babies (but not BFing them in their presence)

But actual foetuses and the women involved, not so much.

There was a beaut of a stupidino in the guardian comments the other day - why don't you sluts keep your legs together instead of aborting my babies?

Erm, I have a 100% foolproof way that means no woman will ever abort a foetus you contributed to - keep it zipped. Good for you AND good for womankind.

TheXxed · 28/11/2015 18:19

spellbook Flowers, it has been reported that the shooter identifies as a woman.

@OneMore: And as soon as women do as he told them, he will complain that he can't get sex. Typical.

@TheXxed: What? Is this a joke? Can one not talk about anything without being reminded of the trans-craze?

MrsTerryPratchett · 28/11/2015 18:26

The thing that really pisses me off is the way this shit is painted. I'm pro-choice. That doesn't mean I 'like' abortions. What I'd like is free, healthy access to contraception, a really great welfare state, support for young (all actually) mums to have their babies if they want. Zero rape and incest, zero abuse and zero coercion. Really great sex and relationship education. Men held emotionally and financially responsible for children as well.

Watch the abortion rate plummet in my world.

But these people don't want any of that. They want women to suffer.

SpellBookandCandle · 28/11/2015 18:27

US news is reporting he has a history of domestic and animal abuse. I cannot even begin to think what might have been in his mind. If he identified as a woman, why would he act out so violently against women at a most vulnerable time? This is all so incomprehensible to me.

PlaysWellWithOthers · 28/11/2015 18:55

Obviously working themselves up to a mental illness defence.

Brown skinned killers are terrorists, white skinned ones are mentally ill love wolves.

Exactly.

I am considering to show up at the next "pro-life" demo in my region with a sign that says "Against abortions - become a lesbian!", and pretend to be part of the demo.

MrsTerryPratchett · 28/11/2015 19:26

Bwahaha Vestal. It might just work!

WhenSheWasBadSheWasHorrid · 28/11/2015 20:12

Flowers spell

mrsT I know what you mean about being pro choice but also wanting the abortion figures to go down.
Women definitely need good access to contraception.

LurcioAgain · 28/11/2015 21:00

I read a great blog post ages back by someone who had shifted from being an evangelical Christian anti abortion campaigner to being pro choice - what had shifted her position was the WHO's stats on abortion ratess and maternal deaths, and in particular the fact that the lowest abortion rates weren't in countries where it was illegal (they tended to have both high abortion rates and high rates of maternal mortality) but in western Europe where you had legal abortion but also freely available contraception and good sex ed. She "changed sides" for evidence based reasons - she wanted to reduce the abortion rate and came to the conclusion that the best way of doing this was to emulate western Europe.

Of course I think it's revealing of the real intentoons of many anti abortion campaigners that they support Holly Hobby type restrictions on provision of contraception as well as wanting to outlaw abortion - the underlying motive is a hatred of women and a hatred for the whole idea of women having sex other than within marriage for the sole purpose of procreation.

msrisotto · 28/11/2015 21:35

Pro life = pro homosexuality!

I like it vestalvirgin. And they would hate it because they're ignorant.

So, despite the story of selling baby parts having been discredited repeatedly, he did it so PP would stop.

here

Still not being spoken about as terrorism though....

Planned Parenthood/Foetal tissue was just a plot line in The Good Wife - is it in the news? The guy doesn't sound particularly like he fits the demographic for Woman-led legal drama.

The morning before this, someone posted a piece to my facebook timeline suggesting that men wanting guns should be put through the same process before buying one that women are before having an abortion (48 hr waits, mandatory councilling, having to travel to one of few places in a state that carries them, walking through a gauntlet of gun control people holding pictures of people murdered with guns etc.).

It's terrorism. Killing people in a building because of the services they provide to women, and it's abhorrent seeing people supporting it.

FreshwaterSelkie · 29/11/2015 07:57

Was it this article Lurcio? I thought it was great, it totally disects the mendacity of the anti-choice movement. All that restricting access to abortion leads to is greater maternal morbidity and mortality, and if the number of abortions moves at all, it goes up in countries where it's illegal, not down.

So if the "pro life" movement were actually motivated to decrease abortions, then they would follow the western european model of increased sex ed, easy/free availability of contraception, and good maternity policies, and voila, fewer abortions. Of course they don't because they're not pro-life, they're anti-choice, so the object is always as PP have stated, to control women.

ISaySteadyOn · 29/11/2015 08:09

Lurcio, I can't link on my phone, but isn't that article 'How I lost faith in the pro life movement' from Love Joy Feminism. It is really good as are many of her other writings. Highly recommend.

LurcioAgain · 29/11/2015 08:27

Yes, that was the article, thanks for digging it out Selkie. (I'm hopeless about bookmarking stuff!) It is a brilliant piece.

OneMoreCasualty · 29/11/2015 08:31

I've bookmarked that, thank you. I would donate to a campaign to have that printed and leafleted across schools!

FreshwaterSelkie · 29/11/2015 08:37

It's a brilliant piece isn't it? Any opportunity to link to it, and I'm all over it, because it might just make someone have a re-think about what their stance actually means.

LurcioAgain · 29/11/2015 08:56

The follow up pieces are very good too.

Actually, the whole website is great for many reasons, but particularly for helping liberal Europeans get inside the mindset of the conservative right in America - Libby Ann is very good at getting across why all this stuff seems to make sense when you're inside the culture (and the way in which women get brainwashed by their religious upbringing and end up espousing positions which are clearly to their detriment).

SenecaFalls · 29/11/2015 15:15

Well, this is a surprise:

www.cnn.com/2015/11/29/politics/mike-huckabee-planned-parenthood-domestic-terrorism/

Of course he does spectacularly miss the point of calling it terrorism.

Dervel · 29/11/2015 17:19

Have we actually gotten to the bottom of the shooter's motive? Or is the media just making assumptions again?

VestalVirgin · 29/11/2015 17:31

The morning before this, someone posted a piece to my facebook timeline suggesting that men wanting guns should be put through the same process before buying one that women are before having an abortion (48 hr waits, mandatory councilling, having to travel to one of few places in a state that carries them, walking through a gauntlet of gun control people holding pictures of people murdered with guns etc.).

A good start, but I would also suggest that they have to prove they have no criminal record.
It is ridiculous that getting a gun is easier than getting an abortion in the US, but getting a gun should be MORE difficult than getting an abortion, not just as difficult.

@Dervel: I think in this case, the motive is pretty obviously misogyny. Or did you mean the "baby parts" part?
