I am quite in awe of Geena Davis of late. Speaking up about inequality in the U.S. film industry and the work she has done to raise the bar in women's roles in kids TV shows.
I'm not sure she is my all time top feminist icon though.
Who is your feminist hero, and why?

OP posts:

"But we're not the ones making statements that we refuse to back up with facts."

Funny you should say that, a feminist in another thread is trying to claim the reason police can't find or arrest any sex-traffickers over a 6 month op involving every police force is basically because police are men who visit brothels. I'd love to see the facts to back that up.

CallaLilli · 14/12/2015 00:41

That's another thread, which I've not yet seen. I was referring to this one. But clearly you don't have any evidence so you're just making up shit.

norrean · 14/12/2015 00:45

I want to see the evidence that the reason a 6 month operation didn't find any traffickers to arrest is that "a % of police are men who visit brothels".

I look forward to seeing that evidence.

norrean · 14/12/2015 00:46

And what about the other poor children in Pakistan who survived being shot by terrorists? Why isn't England taking them in and making them rich and famous? huh?

Cerseirys · 14/12/2015 01:14

That's completely irrelevant to this thread! You clearly have no idea what you're talking about re Malala's speeches and you're revealing yourself to be a bit of an idiot and derailing the thread.

CallaLilli · 14/12/2015 01:15

Well I'd be interested in seeing that evidence too but it has nothing to do with this thread. Why not argue your point and demand evidence on that thread itself rather than here?

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 14/12/2015 07:43

It's interesting, this thing where women get attacked purely for being middle class.

partialderivative · 14/12/2015 08:27

norream, I don't think Malala won a Nobel Peace Prize for 'leading a nice cushy life in this country'.

PlaysWellWithOthers · 14/12/2015 08:29

Please ignore the obvious trolls, they get off on derailing threads and go and excitedly tell their equally ridiculous friends so they can play some kind of internet biscuit game.

Ughnotagain · 14/12/2015 08:54

Cerseirys oh fair enough - misunderstood there!

Vestal I'm not here for a fight over Greer. I think she's out of order, you don't, whatever. I've just as much right to say I don't agree with her as you have to say you do.

LineyReborn · 14/12/2015 09:05

Agree. Ignore the derailers.

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 14/12/2015 09:14

Vestal's comment was rude and unjustified.Ugh is a regular posters on a number of sections on MN. I don't recall any which would justify what Vestal said.

Oh andUgh is right Angela Carter was a brilliant writer.

SkaterGrrrrl · 23/12/2015 11:37

My feminist icons:

Tina Fey
Caitlin Moran
Meryl Streep
Naomi Wolf

BeakyMinder · 23/12/2015 16:41

Another vote for Greer here. She also happens to be an astonishingly good literary critic, one of the most original thinkers on the Renaissance I've ever come across, and all-round public intellectual. It never ceases to wind me up how she (and other great female thinkers) are pigeonholed as feminists when non-entities like AC Grayling get to opine boringly on any topic they like.

kickassangel · 24/12/2015 04:05

chimamanda ngozi adichie is one of mine.

Gummydrops · 27/12/2015 18:38

I don't have any AS a Black woman I don't believe that feminism has impacted my life that greatly. I believe feminism has not done anything positive for Black women other than create rift between the Black male and Black km. Woman. I a much more concerned in racial equality than feminism as racial inequality has had and does have a larger impact on me but also the Black community and people from the African continent.

Gummydrops · 27/12/2015 18:41

In addition although I have for equality between males and females I do not identify as a feminist. The Black female experience are completely different as Black women have to deal with inequality of sex and race.

Gummydrops · 27/12/2015 18:44

In terms of Malala I agree she is a brave young woman but you can see she has been hijacked by others to push their own agendas. It makes me sad and uncomfortable how she is wheeled out all the time.

What about bell hooks, Gummydrops? She's someone who says as far as she's concerned, gender and racial issues are completely linked. And everything I've ever seen by her has seemed very insightful and intelligent--she's definitely one of my nominees for "Notable feminists you'd like to have dinner with".

Gummydrops · 27/12/2015 21:22

Lol first time I have been accused of impersonating a Black woman. Just because I don't agree with your mind set you have decided 1. I am not a woman 2.I am not Black. So please tell me how what t characteristics will make me one.

Gummydrops · 27/12/2015 21:34

Hello Teitetua I like elements of what some of these women have to say. However my view is that racism is a far more pressing issue for me and always has been. I have experienced discrimination more as a Black person than as a woman. And Sillages behaviour is a perfect example of why I do not relate to feminism. She completely dismissed my view point as it does no match her perspective, therefore it is irrelevant and I must be a non black male. Feminism will only be relatable to me and others when white Feminists allow other perspectives to be heard and only if they accept that women of colour experience additional challenges alongside sexism. But what do I know I'm not Black or female right?

TheXxed · 27/12/2015 23:05

Arundhati Roy, Slyvia Wynter and Lynne Brown off the top of my head.

I don't see anything in Gummydrop's posting history to suggest she is not who and what she says she is but if you think she is lying you know what the protocol is.

I've been accused of being a man on this forum. I'm not.
