Can anyone tell me how suitable this film would be for a 10 year old? DD wants to see it, I'd like to take her but I'm just not sure how graphic or how far the awful treatment of the suffragette's is depicted & whether it would be edging into the 'not suitable' category if really upsetting.

Smile thanks

Well, I had a look at the BBFC site and it says spoilers, but they aren't if you know even the smallest amount of the story. www.bbfc.co.uk/releases/suffragette-2015 The BBFC mentions some blood, some other not nice stuff, swearing but not very much and smoking. If you want the bits cut and paste, let me know.

Thanks, I did feel a bit daft mentioning spoilers when I know the history (not that well admittedly but enough to know what the story is all about) Grin but I just don't like hearing anything about a film I've not seen. That's down to my DD who can't not give the plot away when she knows I've not seen something!

I think I'll take her - she's becoming very aware of the different ways girls/women are viewed/treated in certain situations/circumstances & I think this film will give her a good sense of the historical background etc.

Does she have an idea about what might happen. The force-feeding and horse would be the ones I'd worry about. Being as vague as I can!

TensionWheelsCoolHeels · 13/10/2015 15:35

No she doesn't know about those things. Im guessing they are quite distressing to watch? I think that's my worry. She's been exposed to cartoon-style violence etc. but not anything that realistic I don't think. I'm just not sure how those scenes would go down with her. I'll ponder it some more & then decide.

I'm careful with things that involve kids imagining what things might be like. Being hit by a horse; not that worrying to me. The Police, prison and force-feeding; extremely worrying.

MrsLeighHalfpenny · 13/10/2015 15:59

It's a 12 certificate - she might not get in.

It contains "infrequent strong language, moderate violence, a scene of force-feeding".

MrsTerryPratchett · 13/10/2015 16:27

I think 12A so at the discretion of the parent, AFAIK.

PlaysWellWithOthers · 13/10/2015 17:00

I think I would leave her watching it until the DVD comes out. Things like that are so much easier to stop and discuss at home, where they're safe IYSWIM?

The trailer of the part from Black Friday (?) was bad enough, so I'd probably be inclined to want to be able to pause the film and be able to have a bit of a chat with a distressed child?

Not sure if that's made much sense, but, you know your child best.

TensionWheelsCoolHeels · 13/10/2015 17:07

Hmm, I think you are right Play, it would be best to watch on DVD to be able to pause it if it's too much etc. It's just a pity she's not a bit older, she's dead keen & we've been having some nice chats about feminism recently so it would have been ideal to get a flavour of historical context. Timing would be good to follow on from those chats but not so good given she's just a bit too young yet.

Bit late to the party but went to see this with dd (14) tonight.
Not gruesome- the horse scene is mostly the build up and aftermath, only a little is shown of the actual collision. The force feeding scene is harrowing, though.

For those of you with children 12+, please, take your daughters to see this film. It is so powerful. A must see.

The forcefeeding pretty graphic horse less so (I thought) odd f-word here/there some violence - I think I'd be dubious about taking a 10 y.o to be honest Although I would say it depends on the 10 yo to an extent. Judgement call but I would err on side of caution.

mudandmayhem01 · 01/11/2015 15:51

I took dd 11 and ds10, they were both outraged and moved by the whole film. I love having children of an age where we can see a proper film after years of kids films.

SkaterGrrrrl · 14/11/2015 19:58

There is also a (non graphic) scene with a sexual assault.

VestalVirgin · 14/11/2015 20:14

Have you noticed changes in society caused by the film?

I am hoping that some women will, if they see the film, finally realize that the right to vote was not given to us by men out of the goodness of their hearts, but that our ancestors fought for it.

Am rather fed up with ungrateful idiots who oppose feminism, but happily use their right to vote and right to hold a job, etc., that they wouldn't even have if feminists had not fought for it.

The film will come out where I live in 2016, so I didn't see any reactions myself, yet.
