Is this the ultimate in mansplaining?

Chris Brown has pleaded that he should be allowed an Australian visa so that he can use his influence as an entertainer to raise awareness about domestic violence - and go on tour, of course.

Am I being reactionary? Does he have value to add to the discussion? I know we need men to stand up and be counted on the side of the various causes we campaign for as feminists, but this leaves a bad taste in my mouth - am I the only one?

He can raise Australian awareness of DV without being physically present in the country.

And unless he can point to strong evidence of his participation in such campaigns, and an extensive programme of such events for the time he wants this visa for, it's all self-serving bollocks isn't it?

Self-serving bollocks - exactly the phrase I was looking for Grin

"My life mistakes should be a wake up call for everyone. Showing the world that mistakes don't define you. Trying to prevent spousal abuse," he said.

That's quite a statement! How on earth will him touring and making money prevent spousal abuse?? Surely it shows the opposite - smack your girlfriend and have no professional repercussions.

I think this must be a new thing - didn't rapist ched Evans friends supporters criticise rape crisis for not working with him to raise awareness on consent? Bizarre!

EmpressKnowsWhereHerTowelIs · 30/09/2015 08:25

Has he done anything to raise DV awareness in the UK? Guessing not somehow.

Thefitfatty · 30/09/2015 08:34

Because he often discusses domestic violence before going on to sing about making money and ho's?

shovetheholly · 30/09/2015 08:39

I will buy this when he donates all of his earnings from the tour and any publicity or sponsorship connected with it to DV charities. And I mean every single penny.

This is his track record:

  1. Assaulted Rihanna in 2009 with a barrage of punches to her face, bit her ear and strangled her
  2. Became violent again in 2011 throwing an object at a window because he got asked in an interview about the assault
  3. Involved in a brawl in 2012
  4. Used drugs while on community service, breaking its terms
  5. Ignore the restraining order not to go to the same functions as Rihanna
  6. Got a neck tattoo that looks like the face of a battered woman
  7. Punched someone in 2013 over a parking space, and threatened to shoot him
  8. Arrested in 2013 for felony assault, sentenced to rehab, violated rules there and then prison.

Bearing all that in mind, I highly doubt he is a rehabilitated man.

In fact, I think he just wants access to Australia, and New Zealand, so that he can sell tickets to his concert and make money.

I'm in NZ and he is, unfortunately, getting a lot of publicity at the moment. I hope he is not granted entry. We have an appalling record of violence against women and children here, and I don't like the message that condoning his visit sends.

I'm also highly Hmm at all the dimwits on Twitter who are saying they'll take a beating from him.

EmpressKnowsWhereHerTowelIs · 01/10/2015 13:20

So he was a violent bastard and hasn't done anything since to suggest any different?

sashh · 03/10/2015 08:06

Well him being denied a visa because he is violent does actually raise awareness that DV has consequences
