Rock music's not for girls

So, I found out that my preferred radio station (after Kerrang shut down) is relaunching and rebranding to provide: "the first truly male-focused, fully national music and entertainment brand for 25-44 year olds".

It promises the "best fresh rock and guitar-based music", and will launch with Moyles at 6.30am on Monday, September 21.
Article here

Is this real life trolling?

Girls can't listen to rock music? Chris Moyles back on the radio? "Great Britain needs great banter"?

I actually felt a bit gutted, silly though it may seem. It's just so stupid but I like my guitar based music and don't need a bunch of boys pushing me out. It just made my day that little bit worse.

I feel your pain and disappointed. It sucks quite frankly and I am astonished that the music industry is regressing rather than progressing. Lots of points have been made (various articles in the Guardian and Independent) lately about poor representation of women at rock festivals, the fact that Florence was only allowed to headline after a male rock act dropped out , etc . What I would love to see is musicians taking a stand against this crap and refusing to play live sessions with the new and 'improved' Radio X. I would hope that there are many artists - male and female- who absolutely do not believe that there is no place for women in rock and alternative music.

StealthPolarBear · 10/09/2015 21:33

Has kerrang gone then? It dropped off our radio but then so have loads of others
I assume the magazine is still going?

PersonalClown · 10/09/2015 21:34

Apparently I've been doing Life wrong. I discovered Guns n Roses at 9. Nirvana during my teenage years was heaven. MCR and Green Day in early 20's? Epic!

On another note, Kerrang is still going. It's on DAB, web players or you can listen liveon the phone app.

mewkins · 10/09/2015 21:34

Btw there is another thread in aibu about this. Good as it gives me two places to vent!!

NiNoKuni · 10/09/2015 21:35

The 90s called - they want their lad-mag tude back.

Fuck's sake.

It's the same as all those man-crisps and man-chocolates, isn't it? Men want big chunky things, ladies want delicate fluffy light things. I guess alienating half their potential market is their own punishment.

StealthPolarBear · 10/09/2015 21:35

Oh so it's just us then. The radio in out bedroom only gets radio 2 and even that's dodgy. My grandad had more technology on his wireless back in the 60s

msrisotto · 10/09/2015 21:40

Oh sorry, didn't realise there was another thread. I'll take a look.

Kerrang is online but not available otherwise outside of London.

Moyles is a radio geek, very knowledgeable and passionate about the medium and a pretty good broadcaster, whether or not his content is to everyone's taste I quite like him don't tell anyone shhh. But he's absolutely terrible at music - he's all about the chat and part of the reason he was dumped by Radio 1, besides being too old, was that they wanted to move more towards music. So if you're going to relaunch a radio station claiming to be all about the music, but then announce Moyles as the presenter of your flagship programme, you're talking out your arse.

It's a bit stupid, but Heart and Magic with chart hits and 80s power ballads = for the birds, XFM with cock rock = for the blokes. Not surprised commercial radio goes for this simple but no doubt successful marketing strategy.

6 Music, maybe? I'm stuck on Absolute 90s myself, the golden age of indie. But I rarely listen when they have presenters, Frank Skinner is especially grim.

StealthPolarBear · 10/09/2015 21:42

I can't bear frank and the sycophants either

StealthPolarBear · 10/09/2015 21:43

It's the fake laughing I hate so much
I do like the 90s thought, even though we have to listen to it with the microwave unplugged and the kitchen window open

FloraFox · 10/09/2015 21:44

I'm so disappointed, XFM is my favourite station. Mind you, even if it wasn't for the sexist rebrand, adding Johnny Vaughan, Ricky Wilson, Chris Moyles and Vernon Kaye would be enough to put me off.

"Fresh"? pffft

mewkins · 10/09/2015 21:47

6music is good but I don't have digital radio in my car. I may have to install one.

Yes I am not just disappointed in the anti female stance but also at the fact that the are effectively doing away with a stayion which really championed new music and did lots of good live sessions etc. I feel it will just become a slightly heavier version of absolute radio.

WhirlpoolGalaxyM51 · 10/09/2015 21:47

ToGo but loads of women listen to XFM I've been listening to it since it launched in London, must be more than 20 years ago, I remember when it happened it was so exciting to us alternative teen types!

And now they've just told people like me to fuck off.

It's annoying. And crappy. And, as I pointed out on the other thread, Chris Moyles is a total wanker. So, that too.

SlipperyJack · 10/09/2015 21:47

I still miss Johnny Doom on Kerrang. Online just isn't as convenient as DAB.

MuttonDressedAsGoose · 10/09/2015 21:51

You might like Team Rock radio, on digital radio. It's rock and some metal. Or it was. I haven't listened in a few months.

ToGoBoldly · 10/09/2015 21:51

Xfm launched 1st September 97, the day after Princess Diana died. So 18 years. I remember it clear as day too. Man I feel old!

PlaysWellWithOthers · 10/09/2015 21:52

Huzzah for Spotify, sez I

Elledouble · 10/09/2015 21:54

Ah man. Kerrang was great for the first few years - it was my soundtrack to the summer of 2004. 'Golden Touch' by Razorlight and 'Talk Talk Talk' by the Ordinary Boys take me right back there. I got texts read out on the Ugly Phil Breakfast Show a couple of times.

Next time I buy a car I'm definitely getting DAB. 6Music is the only good radio station left.

WhirlpoolGalaxyM51 · 10/09/2015 21:55

ToGo I'm sure it was before then, I was at 6th form, I'm positive!

Going to google Grin I'm in London maybe that makes a difference?

ToGoBoldly · 10/09/2015 21:56

I believe it was a pirate station first so maybe you were listening to the clandestine incarnation before it became legit!

WhirlpoolGalaxyM51 · 10/09/2015 21:58

Ah 1992 in my neck of the woods!

So they've lost someone who's been tuning in for 23 years.

up to them isn't it.

mewkins · 10/09/2015 21:58

Yes I think they had a few short term pop up radio stations before it launched properly.

WhirlpoolGalaxyM51 · 10/09/2015 22:00

"The station's roots are in pirate radio. In 1992, Xfm launched RSLs in the Camden area of north London. In 1996, Xfm was awarded the final London wide FM licence, beating Capital Gold."

Not quite a cool as getting it when pirate but not bad on the cred front!

I used to love pirate radio stations. There were squillions of them and most were dance with people just talking over the top the whole time sending "shouts out" to all their mates and namechecking people and saying see you later down X (crap local night spot) and all the rest of it Grin

Happy days...

Pedestriana · 10/09/2015 22:03

I used to listen to XFM but when they got tangled up with Capital, they became rather commerical.

I can't find a radio station I like at the moment. I like loud rock (or whatever you'd shoebox Nirvana, Royal Blood, QOTSA, EODM, TCV and any other Josh Homme-related musical offerings into) mostly.

ToGoBoldly · 10/09/2015 22:04

It's a shame because radio is in danger of dying on it's arse, and is crying out for some creativity, so it's a chance to do something really modern and inventive to try to carve your own niche, but no broadcasters can actually be bothered with that, it seems. They go for the lazy, unimaginative "girly music" or "blokey music".
