Conflicting aims re prostitution in Scotland

Just seen this on BBC

Consultation over plan to decriminalise prostitution - www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-scotland-politics-34190170

Which is only a few months after this.

Campaign calls for ban on buying sex in Scotland - www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-33046501

The MAP promoting legalisation of brothels is an independent so hopefully will never get anywhere with this.

Are you capable of articulating why that is the case Hirples or is this simply a pimp lobby regurgitation?

Careful, your ideology is showing.

HirplesWithHaggis · 09/09/2015 14:07

Isn't the link enough? (I'm impressed you got through all 115 pages so fast!)

FloraFox · 09/09/2015 14:20

Enough for what? Enough to set off the pimp lobby dog whistle? The good thing about dog whistles is that they make it easy to identify the hounds.

HirplesWithHaggis · 09/09/2015 14:28

So you haven't read it at all. Even the first bit would do, you don't have to read through all of the supporting evidence that shows Farley works in an unethical manner and twists facts till they bleed.

FloraFox · 09/09/2015 14:37

I have read the LSE paper several times.

You haven't explained what is wrong with Melissa Farley nor how the references to her work in this paper invalidate the research or conclusions. I'm interested in whether you can do that.

PlaysWellWithOthers · 09/09/2015 14:50

The link in Haggis's post set my anti virus off. Might be best not to click it.

Do you have a different source?

HirplesWithHaggis · 09/09/2015 15:58

Does this link work better? Sorry about setting off your antivirus, it works fine on my ipad.

FloraFox · 09/09/2015 16:17

Could you type out the URL? I don't click pimp lobby links unless I can see what it is.

HirplesWithHaggis · 09/09/2015 16:42

That's the first link. I need to post the second link in another post, for some reason I can only c'n'p one thing at a time.

HirplesWithHaggis · 09/09/2015 16:44

maggiemcneill.files.wordpress.com/2011/07/complaint-to-apa-re-melissa-farley.pdf

And there's the second.

HirplesWithHaggis · 09/09/2015 16:46

Though all this talk about whether MF is a reliable source is rather derailing the original conversation.

It is interesting that this proposal comes at this specific time when there is an inquiry underway in Scotland on prostitution.

i know jean says she has listened to / linked with sex workers (the style of the document is not unlike the writing style of some well known sex- work bloggers in Scotland - maybe they drafted it for her?) but she has not spoken to 1 single service provider or agency that works with women and men in Scotland.
wonder why....

HirplesWithHaggis · 09/09/2015 16:54

Yes, and the conversation went on. It doesn't need to stay on that track any longer, the subject is the decriminalising of prostitution in Scotland. Can we get back to that?

weeonion · 09/09/2015 16:59

Did anyone hear jean on Call Kaye this morning? She said that the saunas were safe, clean and well operated. Funny that is not what many women who are prostituted in them say. Did jean chat to those women i wonder?

If Brothels were legal in Scotland, the traffickers and pimps would focus on Scotland. Pretty risk free way to make money out of vulnerable women and a small number of men.

FloraFox · 09/09/2015 17:19

I'm not clicking that link as it is a pimp lobby site. From the URL it looks like someone complained about something Melissa Farley did. Not sure I should care about that, especially if I don't know the outcome of the complaint.

How does the reference to Melissa Farley after the credence of the methodology, research or conclusions of the LSE research?

PlaysWellWithOthers · 09/09/2015 17:26

Oh, I've read that complaint about MF before. It's from 2010. Any news on whether it was upheld? Because she seems to still be practicing, and therefore it probably wasn't. So, it's. Not. True.

colley · 09/09/2015 17:28

So someone made a complaint about a professional, which was found not to be true? But a good way to discredit someone to still be 5 years later posting a link to the complaint.

PlaysWellWithOthers · 09/09/2015 17:32

Especially when that person is a woman

She said that the saunas were safe, clean and well operated

Don't get me started on this misguided policy. There was one near the Fountainbridge cinema complex and a couple in Torphichen Street area. They looked run down and seedy from the outside. They have gone.

What is it with these women fighting for the rights of men to pay for women's bodies? Is it cool wifey on steroids?

LonnyVonnyWilsonFrickett · 10/09/2015 09:07

It's all about where you start from though, imo.

Saunas in Edinburgh are safer, cleaner and better operated than, say, street prostitution is. But clearly they aren't as safe, clean and well operated as, say, the bank I used to work for. So it's not a lie to say saunas are safe, clean and well operated - but it's clearly disingenuous. Saunas will never reach the level of 'safe' that 99% of other workplaces reach as a minimum.
