"Back at the medical school, two starry-eyed female students tell me they are determined to become doctors." Whirpool you're right, it's such a weird sentence. Are they starry-eyed for wanting to do the job they're training for?
It's like saying, "Back at the law school, two starry-eyed male students tell me they are determined to become lawyers."
Or ""Back at the university, two starry-eyed veterinary students tell me they are determined to become vets."
No kidding. But if they were asked to choose between their careers or their families, which would it be? I would expect most people would choose family over career, male or female. What kind of question is that? Unless they mean starting a family vs a career.
How about instead of limiting the number of female pupils, you say that in exchange for subsidised studies all medical graduates must work for, say, three years in public hospitals or clinics.
