Casualty

Watching Casualty over the weekend, I found it very annoying that one episode (or it might have been the red button one) was called Mrs Walker-to-be. Zoe is a doctor so surely it'd be Dr Walker, or Dr Hanna still if she din't change her mind. Why the assumption that all married women are Mrs even when they actually have a different title????

she din't change her mind

Didn't change her name that should be.

Excellent point. I also hate, for instance, in those Take-a-Break type rags, a romantic story ruined with "... she became Mrs [Malename]". Like, a name-change fairy tapped her on the head or something.

And ignoring the Dr thing is even worse; it's an insult to her qualifications. When we watch the first X-Persons, in the beginning where Dr Jean Grey keeps getting heckled by Senator Kelly and he keeps calling her "Miss Grey", we've been pointing it out to DS(5). He's outraged too.

I don't watch casualty, but is she definitely a Dr and not a Mrs? You revert to being a Mr/Miss/Mrs/Ms once you reach a certain level of seniority.

Pointlessfan · 24/08/2015 08:22

I think she's a consultant so she'd be Miss/Mrs/Miss? I never understand why more senior medics are no longer called doctor!

Pointlessfan · 24/08/2015 08:22

Ms not miss again!

Leeza2 · 24/08/2015 08:29

It's surgeons who are called Mr / Ms. Physicians are called Dr.

Harks back to the times when surgeons were barbers and not doctors , apparently .

EBearhug · 24/08/2015 09:09

I missed the start of both episodes, but there was one bit where Zoe & Max were standing by the table of presents with champagne flutes, talking about "Mr Walker" and "Mrs Walker" to each other, and I was rolling my eyes to myself, because I'm pretty sure in that situation, I'd be saying, "It's Ms Bearhug, thank you."

PreemptiveSalvageEngineer · 24/08/2015 09:33

Ooh! I know this one! Surgeons are called Mr or Miss. Something to do with the Royal College of Surgeons from way back not being affiliated with the mere doctors. Seriously, I know a few surgeons, you insult them if you call them Dr.

Jean Grey is still a Dr, though. And an X-person... Grin

Not pre emptive enough I'm afraid Wink

Are you really a salver ?

PreemptiveSalvageEngineer · 24/08/2015 09:38

And, BTW, I hasten to add that I don't know if a.n. female surgeon would prefer Miss or Ms, and would not presume to guess. I was just talking about the tradition of surgeons not being called Dr.

PreemptiveSalvageEngineer · 24/08/2015 09:39

Leeza, it's PoliticalCorrectSpeak for "pirate".

Which I am, sometimes, yes. Grin Aaarrr.

rosy71 · 24/08/2015 11:23

Zoe is Dr Hanna, hence me objecting to Mrs Walker. If she changed her name, she'd be Dr Walker.

I know several female doctors who practice in their maiden name, so Dr Maiden Name but 'live' in their married name, Mrs/Ms Married.

Leeza2 · 24/08/2015 12:09

LOL at pre emptive

Every day's a school day on MN Grin
