Nigeria president Goodluck Johnson has signed a bill officially banning the practice of female genital mutilation (FGM). The Violence Against Persons (Prohibition) Act 2015, which was passed by the Nigerian Senate earlier in May, also will stop men from leaving their families without making financial provisions. There are plenty of stories all over the web about this. I was surprised that this board didn't have it earlier. The campaign to educate in Nigeria doesn't stop though because I don't think a bill will stop it. But it is a start and something that even though I only put a bit of time into I feel proud of this step.

Have you a link you've found useful, SEB?

The one here is the most honest as we need to step up pressure on making sure it is enforced. But I do feel it is a massive step. Warning the diagrams might be upsetting.

Thanks! I saw this but forgot to post.

It is such a shame that so many of the "apparent first world issues" seem so much more important than the suffering of little girls. But I suppose so long as they a few thousand miles away it doesn't matter. If people are prepared to either donate time or money the Orchid Project could do with your help. The daughters of eve do some superb work and are always in need of more support.

Now I know that people say we can multi task but it seems that only happens in first world causes. And I guess that is why I will jump on things that I think are not that important. Making sure children don't suffer and ensuring women in thord world countries get their share of fair trade money so they are less like to starve or be victims of the men who hold the power of who gets what. So this is my high horse and I will get on it now and again.

As you say it is a start.

This is great news. How / whether it is enforced time will tell. We are failing at this in the UK and the law has been in place for ages. Maybe in a country where it is more prevalent and mainstream it will be quicker / easier to make inroads into stamping it out.

How interesting, I didn't hear about this at all and, since your post, have looked for it on BBC News but found nothing! That does suggest that issues concerning "poor" women thousands of miles away are, as you say, not considered at all important by our society which is very sad.

However, some good news, I found this story on the BBC about a march in Argentina against domestic violence which they are calling an "anti-femicide" march so it's good to know that some feminist issues are making it into the news.

Over the last 5 years I have "donated" about 600 hours to this, Just 10 hours a month helping organisations reach out to people to try and stop this is so important. If every memeber of the board donated time or money it would make such a difference.
