Right to vote

Please help me settle an argument. Were women given the right to vote following the suffragette movement 1918 or the seventies? I can clearly see when reading history that women were given the right to vote 1918 but only if over 30, then ti over 21 but I'm talking full equal voting rights. I can't find anything to back up my argument that it was as late as the 70's but somewhere in my psyche I've convinced myself it was. Please help?

1918 - Representation of the People Act 1918, enfranchising women over the age of 30 who met minimum property qualifications.
1928 - Representation of the People (Equal Franchise) Act giving the vote to all women over the age of 21 (ie in equal terms as men)

Maybe you're thinking of the 1969 Representation of the People Act which changed the voting age to 18?

In a couple of European countries it was only the 70s

In Liechtenstein from what I recall, it was the 90s

Basil - I think Lichtenstein was 1984.
And then there's Switzerland. Universal suffrage was not introduced in Switzerland at a federal level until 1971. Until then, you had the right to vote in some cantons, and not in others. Appenzell held out until 19-fucking-90.

So there was only a ten year period between all men having the vote and all women?

grimbletart · 29/04/2015 14:40

Indeed Children. Even more interesting though is that the 1867 Parliamentary Reform Act gave the following voting rights. Men = 2.5 million voters. Women = 0.

Percentage of UK male and female adult population entitled to vote:

year..........men..........women

1831..........14%............0%

1832..........20%............0%
1867..........33%............0%
1884..........67%............0%
1918.........100%..........40%
1928.........100%.........100%

So, in the UK, most men had the vote in 1884, but most women had to wait another 44 years to get the vote, in 1928.
