Why on earth is it spam?

Thanks for the x though.

Did you read it Linguini?

Maybe I ought to have written more about why I thought it was interesting.

Sorry, it's honestly quite a good article!

I don't think it's spam.

Why do you think it's interesting, Crispy?

EatingChocEggsByMyself · 05/04/2015 14:35

It's only spam if CrispyFern wrote the article; LA Magazine is a genuine publication.

What do you consider interesting? Are you interested in igniting the debate between feminism and porn? I'm unsure what conversation you want to have by linking to this on the Feminism section of a parenting website.

YonicScrewdriver · 05/04/2015 15:24

Iirc, Sasha grey has stopped acting in porn now; as per the predictions of that 2006 article.

It's sad she started watching it aged 11.

CrispyFern · 05/04/2015 16:23

I found it interesting because... I'm concerned about the way so much of porn shows very young girls being basically hurt by men.

I wonder what it is in society that deems this is all Ok. I wonder why as many men want to see this as do.
I wonder who they are exactly, the viewers.

I wonder how young girls and boys are to form their ideas about sex and sexuality with this as their education, like Sasha, who as Yonic says, saw her first porn at 11.
That's probably going to be true of many of our children with the internet.

I thought this was quite a haunting read, dropping in that fact about a few ex prize-winning-porn-actresses killing themselves, dropping in the fact that Sasha's co stars were talking about films made ten years before she was born, dropping in the fact that she's often dressed as a child - pretty much - in these films.

I'm not trying to ignite a debate.
I read it, found it thought provoking, and a bit sad, thought I'd share, and Feminism seemed the right place.
It's not News, it is old, from 2006, but the article was just linked to me this week! It wouldn't belong in Chat...

Then yes, I agree, it was a really interesting read for those points you mentioned, and no, Chat probably wouldn't have been the right forum for it.

According to at least one study (can't link, having a brain fart) children first see p0rn at age 8, often at school, which is a real worry, even for those people who see nothing wrong in filmed debasement of women.

Thanks for posting it.

EatingChocEggsByMyself · 05/04/2015 18:40

Apologies, CrispyFern, reading the article I could see it being used to show empowering porn supposedly is for women if they choose it to be. I've had a few heated conversations with people over this topic and I am probably a bit sensitive to it. When your first few posts didn't give your POV on the article I made assumptions.

I find her story sad and disquieting. Reading it all I could think of was 'the finest trick of the devil is to persuade you that he does not exist'

EhricLovesTheBhrothers · 05/04/2015 19:09

I think sasha grey is very much an anomaly in porn in that she treated it like a physically demanding job, went into it with her eyes mostly open and got out when she had set herself up financially for life. I do not believe that most female porn actors share her experience.
It's unusual to make such an informed and clear decision to go into porn at 18 but her life experiences sound pretty traumatising and sordid and I imagine her life expectations were not high.
I wish her well and I'm relieved for her sake that she's out of it. I wouldn't want young women to read her story and believe she's represenrative.

Linguini · 05/04/2015 20:03

What stands out the most is the statistic on how all the 'top' women in porn have committed suicide.

CrispyFern · 05/04/2015 20:22

I thought the article was good because it wrote her story in quite a plain and unjudgemental way, but I certainly didn't feel it left you to conclude that Sasha was an inspirational success.
