Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

You know how difficult it is to go out for a meal out as a LADY?

Well, this pub, (local to me, lucky aren't I?!) has solved the problem.

No more worrying about what to choose from the menu, no more delicately nibbling away at a salad and leaving hungry, feast your eyes upon the grill section of this menu

I'll book us all a table shall I?

Too many outs in the title....it was the excitement of finally seeing a menu that catered for my lady needs...

Oh dear.

Could I have a ladies rib-eye instead - I like it oozing blood pink.

Seriouslyffs · 26/03/2015 12:57

Ha! I can't get too worked up about that as women are smaller. And DH would definitely order it to make a point
It does all scream ED though- skinny chips, just enough room ice cream etc.

TooOldForGlitter · 26/03/2015 12:58

I don't think the menu is commenting on women being smaller...more that their delicate ladies appetites couldn't manage a proper man size steak.

Jeez, that's depressing. HmmAngry

TooOldForGlitter · 26/03/2015 12:59

Shit isn't it.

Um women do eat less? Or should do anyway - I certainly should

TooOldForGlitter · 26/03/2015 13:02

Do they? I don't eat less than my partner. I do more physical work and I have a bigger appetite. Does that invalidate my lady credentials? I certainly don't need a menu to label something as lady friendly for me, I can usually make a choice for myself without being pointed in the direction of gendered food.

Pantone363 · 26/03/2015 13:07

Meh I can't get worked up about it.

Women do generally eat less than men, it's just crappy marketing. Or quite clever marketing in that some men wouldn't ask for the "ladies" steak and would order the bigger (pricier) steak.

Titsalinabumsquash · 26/03/2015 13:08

How embarrassing! I have spent all these years choosing my food on the basis of what I fancied to eat and then I continued to eat as much as it as I fancied until I was full, and you know what? Not once did I consult my vagina before placing my order, how on earth does DP manage to be seen in public with such a silly woman!... BlushConfusedHmm

Pootles2010 · 26/03/2015 13:08

Yeah we should do. Recommended calorie amounts are different. Agree menu is bit daft, I sometimes wonder if they do this to stop men from ordering the smaller, cheaper option? I've seen it done with breakfasts before.

CMOTGilbertBlythe · 26/03/2015 13:22

How twee.

TooOldForGlitter · 26/03/2015 13:30

Me too Titsalinabumsquash

If only everywhere had a helpful menu like this.

Women are smaller? Eh, no, not necessarily. I'm 5'8 and some of the blokes I see out and about would fit in my pocket.

Does the 'lady' steak come with a small glass of white wine, for the 'lady'? Because no 'lady' could ever want a big glass of red or a pint with her delicate little steak. Twits.

bonkersLFDT20 · 26/03/2015 13:36

I'd love menus to have smaller size portions and charge accordingly.
They don't need to specify it's for the ladies though - I think I can make that decision myself!

EBearhug · 26/03/2015 13:44

I think they could have avoided annoying anyone by saying something like, "smaller steak - for lighter appetites," and not mention any gendered words at all.

As it is, I would probably feel the need to order a 12oz steak, just to make a point.

TooOldForGlitter · 26/03/2015 13:51

Well certainly, many places have 'smaller appetite' options on their menus. Why this one decided to label this particular dish as particularly suitable for ladies is anybodys guess.

Dp is a veggie. I'm not. When waiters bring over our food they always assume the veggie plate is mine. And it's always smaller!

LaurieFairyCake · 27/03/2015 11:43

Yep, same here - dh is veggie and I always order steak

We have to ask for a generous portion of the veggie meal to the waiter or they bring a tiny meal and DH is very fit and active with a large appetite

magimedi · 27/03/2015 11:50

I am not condoning this, but in the USA, at least 30+ years ago smaller steaks were always known as 'ladies steaks'. I suspect that is where the term has come from - very dated.

Titsalinabumsquash · 27/03/2015 12:37

I bet this restaurant always hands a card machine to the man to pay too, because obviously us ladies can't carry financial bits in our tiny purses and when we order a diet coke (for DP) and regular coke (for me) they always assume it's the other way around, it must be me on the diet! (another bug bare of mine!)

zombiesheep · 27/03/2015 12:42

I agree magimedi

MisterDobalina · 27/03/2015 13:23

I might work up an appetite and order three lady steaks, and six portions of skinny chips.

Anniegetyourgun · 27/03/2015 13:41

Maybe it came from a heifer. So we don't get any of those dangerous male 'ormones in our food.

EhricLovesTheBhrothers · 28/03/2015 10:45

Ok so the average woman needs fewer calories, but who is to say we don't eat less at lunch to save room for a massive dinner out? This is bollocks.
