Gym thinks only men can be Drs

I've just seen a link to a Daily Fail article (I won't link obviously) about a gym in Cambridgeshire

A paediatrician joined and she found that her electronic key wouldn't allow her access to the female changing room. The 'glitch' was explained by staff - apparently her title Dr automatically defaulted to the assumption she was male.
I'm currently speechless.

OP posts:

I find the argument re hard work and the title change being used interesting.

Doctors use the term; but then if they do even more work and move up to consultant they then stop using doctor and become Mr/Mrs/Miss/Ms - why is that?

JeanneTheRabidFeminist · 19/03/2015 17:29

I think you are very confused about how this all works if you think I have the slightest control over whether you continue posting or not.

I admit, I'm in doubt of your ability to 'not go on' based on past experience, but, like I said, I do hold out hope.

JeanneTheRabidFeminist · 19/03/2015 17:31

hula, is it true surgeons also don't use Dr? I could be wrong but I think so.

Traditionally surgeons use Mr (and presumably the feminine epithet of their choosing) in order to remind them to remove their caputs from their rectums and remember that they are basically barbers with letters after their names. Grin

shit Latin

Only disrespectful to surgeons with no sense of humour

Grin I love that, puffins.

I hope my cousin's wife doesn't know that - she's a woman surgeon and I think she rocks.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 19/03/2015 17:48

I saw it on Twitter earlier.

PetulaGordino · 19/03/2015 17:59

A surgeon in the UK may be called Dr if they have an MD and choose to use it (Ms/Mrs/mr is still correct obv)

This is why I rarely post in feminism. Everything that is about women gets derailed into being about transgender or gender queer. Very boring.

Kim, the OP is about the assumption that a woman can not be a Dr. Or at the least, that the default for a Dr is a man. The OP is about women and a very obvious example of everyday sexism.

No Kim, you straight away jumped to gender queer people and why anyone needs to say they are female or male anyway. A totally different discussion.

Have they changed them so that Chopper is an option?

No?

I'll get my coat then.

When buying a wedding present from John Lewis online, you are asked to tell them if you are male or female. I cannot figure out why.

Gender targeted marketing and buying habits.

JeanneTheRabidFeminist · 19/03/2015 21:39

Yes, I had noticed you called it a 'glitch'. Hmm

kim, do you honestly think no one except yourself understands these concepts? Do you really think none of the rest of us has ever come across an example of normalised misogyny before (which is what this is - not a 'glitch').

We all have. Yes, it's annoying. So is minimizing it.

No, it isn't a glitch.

Glitches are mistakes, usually temporary ones that can be sorted.

This is habitual misogyny. They are very different.

If you cannot understand this, you need to think beyond 'computer says no' and 'that's the system'. Those are the sorts of replies people always make to justify habitual misogyny.
