Site question: what do you all think about the various categories in this "feminism" section of "talk"?

With my apologies for being a relative noob in this neck of the woods - I have before now mainly just posted in threads that have come up in the "active" list, and only relatively recently have started starting my own threads, and browsing this specific bit of the board.

And I've missed loads! And half the time I don't know where to post so come here to "feminist chat". And I've noticed posts not on the chat bit don't seem to be seen as much.

I am very aware that this isn't my call, but has there ever been any discussion about asking MN to consolidate all the feminist sections into one feminism section, so we don't miss anything?

I am very ready to be persuaded that I've got it all wrong!

Id like one big board too.

I'm really lolling remembering 'that bastard Ghandi' Grin

PetulaGordino · 05/03/2015 15:21

i can usually understand theory stuff (including epistowhatnot and poststructionalitythingy) when it's played out over the course of a thread in a particular context, with people who are very patiently explaining things in very small words and careful analogies. the judith butler thread went stratospherically high above my head however Grin

which doesn't mean i don't think it should have been here of course!

ifyourehoppyandyouknowit · 05/03/2015 15:25

Loads of people have said versions of "I find the theory interesting and easy to understand, except Buffy and her epistemiwhatsit" recently. It makes me smile, like I have a little niche in incomprehensible bollocks in this little corner of the Internet

I find buffy to be a brilliant teacher, and very good at peeling back theory and then building on it so I can understand it. Everyday really is a school day in FWR chat.

Jessica147 · 05/03/2015 15:25

Can I also vote for "women's rights" to be back in the title? I'm (relatively) new to mumsnet, and when posters were referring to the FWR board it took me ages to work out what it meant. I found feminism but thought that couldn't be right cos there was no "WR" in the title!

I keep meaning to take a look at the 'theory' section and try to learn some. But I never do - just pick stuff up as we go along. Similar with books I guess.

And YY to 'womens rights' should still be in the title - rightly or wrongly some people have a problem with the F word, but I'd hope not with WR.

caryam · 05/03/2015 15:45

I don't think FWR gets enough traffic to justify having so many boards. And that is why some hardly ever get posted on.

SconeRhymesWithGone · 05/03/2015 16:37

I just reported the thread and asked MNHQ to consider putting "Women's Rights" back in the title.

Thanks for this - will pass to the powers that be.

I just forget all the other sections are there.

OddBoots · 05/03/2015 20:32

It still says Women's rights in the URL at least.

AKnickerfulOfMenace · 05/03/2015 21:01

Feminist Book Club was an attempt to read specifically feminist texts on a monthly basis, as per the main Book Club. It was pretty regular for a while and even got featured in the MN newsletter.

AKnickerfulOfMenace · 05/03/2015 21:04

So that's what made it different from just taking a feminist perspective on a general fiction text, Still.

However, without SGM, it's died a death and is a general place for book chat, which I'd be happy to see in general FWR chat.

RebeccaMumsnet · 06/03/2015 12:36

Hi all,

Thanks for this.
We haven't actually released it yet but we do have a new 'watch this topic' feature coming soon that may well help.

The removal of Women's Rights was purely because the whole title wasn't visible on mobile as it was too long and so we made lots of small tweaks across the boards to make things a little tidier for Tech reasons.

We can certainly have a look at ways of improving things for you all if there is a consensus but we'd rather keep the topics as they are. If you all decide to just post in Feminism chat, that's fine by us and we can keep an eye on the stats in other areas in the future to see if they're used or not.

ArcheryAnnie · 06/03/2015 12:47

Thanks for that, Rebecca - and I'm sorry to have been the one to drag all this up, but I had been wondering if there was a reason things were like they are now.

Might one compromise be a sticky on "feminism support" pointing out that the highest-traffic area is chat, so that if you post asking for support and nobody answers, it's because they haven't seen it, not because nobody cares about you?

I wouldn't want to lose the Victims of Violence thread.
