Labour's pink bus

Is this really the best way the Labour Party can think of to woo women voters?!

I was quite impressed with Labour from a feminist perspective, but this is the most hamfisted attempt to win over the "women's vote" I could imagine.

Hello SoccerFunDays and welcome to Mumsnet! Glad this thread inspired you to join us. You don't have to just post here though. Why not try some other threads too?

StillLostAtTheStation · 11/02/2015 19:11

Tiggy and the classic , rather patronising , response to anyone who doesn't agree with the prevailing view of the sisterhood.

Why should she post elsewhere?

PetulaGordino · 11/02/2015 19:36

I'm not sure that tiggy has ever been that swayed by the prevailing view of the sisterhood Grin

Great take on this from Fleet Street Fox

" A pink bus tells disaffected women that you think they're stupid, that they need help with men-only stuff, and that you, personally, Harriet, think women can be tricked by bright colours into voting for someone on the basis of their winkies or lack thereof rather than their abilities

If you take the logic of your pink bus to its ultimate conclusion - if you say that because nine million women didn't vote at the last election they must get a bus in appropriate colours to persuade them – you need to get a black bus to talk to the 28% of Afro-Caribbeans who didn't vote.

And a blue bus with Jeremy Clarkson in it to talk to all the millions of white men who didn't bother. And a rainbow bus for gays. And why not a silver bus for older voters, or a pale brown one for people of mixed race?"

Well I'm annoyed, it should have glitter too and it doesn't. So I'm not voting for them now, so off the mark a glitterless pink bus, what were they thinking? Shock

PTAblues · 12/02/2015 12:33

It could be worse. They could've actually had a big kitchen table on the bus. Then as they drove around in search of the non voting wimmin they could screech to a halt when they some likely contenders and HH and her lackeys could drag the table out and invite the laddeez for a sit down chat.
Why hasn't the Labour Party Thinktank for Stupid Ideas headhunted me yet?

I can imagine this seeming a good idea at a committee but once someone had actually seen the big pink bus they should've had the sense to scrap it.

Oh and a soft play section in the bus to put the kids in whilst HH was chewing the ear off their mothers.

PTAblues · 12/02/2015 12:38

I agree it wasn't a bad idea. I quite like HH.

BrendaBlackhead · 12/02/2015 13:29

What made me laugh is that they're arguing it's not pink. It's either magenta or cerise . But not pink.

ChaiseLounger · 12/02/2015 13:55

This is just a ridiculous stunt.
I don't mind HH as such, but this has nothing to do with women.
We have ALL - Men and Women, lost trust in politicians.

We cant differentiate between the parties. We were lied to by Blair, we see the MP expenses, we see Cameron not fulfilling his promises. We open the paper and see Salmon being convicted for 18 years and etc, Obesity Research being funded by Coca Cola etc - the list goes on, we trust no one anymore.

Hassled · 12/02/2015 13:58

I don't see that it's any sort of big deal at all. Possibly misguided, in that the pinkness has become an issue they should have predicted, but as HH said on Radio 4 earlier, my feminism doesn't seep away when I use something that's pink. Does it really matter? I don't feel patronised by it.

OTheHugeManatee · 12/02/2015 14:31

I don't see why it's necessary at all - why do non-voting WIMMIN get all this attention, when the percentage of non-voting men is not all that different? What's irritating about the barbie bus is that by targeting just women it implicitly dumps ALL UK women into a single demographic irrespective of any other characteristics we may have. As though by virtue of our ovaries we all have a unified set of concerns (implicitly focused on ishoos related to children, childcare and kitchen tables ) rather than having as diverse a range of concerns as men do. On account of being, y'know, people.

UptoapointLordCopper · 12/02/2015 14:58

I've heard a suggestion that pink = watered-down red, and then before you know it it will be purple, and then they will dispense with the red pigment altogether and THEY WILL BE BLUE. Tory by not-so-stealth.

I think there's a certain logic in that. Grin

PuffinsAreFictitious · 12/02/2015 15:08

It's a shit colour for anything. (I must be against science, and so must boys until really quite recently, because pink does my swede in)

However.

It has got people talking about politics. It has got people who would normally not discuss politics discussing it. It's a really cruddy idea, but it might have a positive effect.

happywanderingwithdog · 12/02/2015 15:35

That anyone in the Labour Party though this was a good idea is incredible and just shows what they think of women. Condescending wankers.

HesterShaw · 12/02/2015 17:25

UKIP sticking with the standing at the back dressed stupidly and looking stupid party colours.

Snigger. With Colin the dachshund?

Why should I like pink because I am a laydee? Blue is my favourite colour but that doesn't mean I would in a billion years vote Conservative. Talk about bloody patronising.

RufusTheReindeer · 12/02/2015 19:26

Red lite Grin

I like that,

RufusTheReindeer · 12/02/2015 19:27

Not as much as the "women like pink it's science" bit...

Sorry I know I paraphrased, I'm not very good at cut and paste Smile

Sn00p4d · 12/02/2015 19:39

It's patronising better together lady all over again, the mind boggles.

Poofus · 12/02/2015 19:57

Rufus, you didn't paraphrase. Not really. Sadly. It was women like pink. THEY DO. IT'S SCIENCE.

I am very unsure about the pink bus. Presumably Labour are targeting women non-voters because they seem more likely to be won over. However, it seems like yet another example of "men are the norm, women need a special different version" to me.

I wasn't keen on the Harman webchat either. Oh dear. I was considering voting Labour but I can't really see it happening.

Iheartu · 12/02/2015 20:14

I dont get it. Harriet Harman is a feminist and she wanst to make politics more relevant to women?

But people want to complain about some paint.

RufusTheReindeer · 12/02/2015 20:22

Oooops sorry poofus

Good point well made Smile

BrowersBlues · 13/02/2015 13:20

RIP Labour.

When someone told me about this yesterday I thought it was a joke. I have heard it all now. My DD 18 was appalled. Is this really 2015??? Seriously??????
