Who to vote for as a feminist

WorkingBling · 20/01/2015 11:27

I am really struggling ahead of the elections. I have decided that commitment to feminist principals needs to be a strong part of my voting decision making process. But I honestly am not sure this helps.

Lib dems have terrible track record and while I like nick's wife, I can't vote for a party where there's only one woman I am impressed by.

Instinctively i am more of a labour supporter but with the exception of Harriet H I honestly feel underwhelmed by their female representation and view on women.

This leaves the conservatives. There are a number of woman in the party who impress me. But Dave doesn't strike me as a man who really believes in feminist principals.

Help please. All you lovely informed women must have some thoughts.

I couldn't vote Tory, UKIP or BNP as they are far too Right wing (and the Tories have an awful habit of demonising/making life worse for the poorer sections of society)

I am disillusioned with The Lib Dems and Labour for a variety of reasons.

That leaves the Greens, really. (I do also really like Caroline Lucas, so that's a bonus.) I'm particularly interested in their views on a Citizens Wage (or equivalent) and their small - business - friendly approach.

I wasn't aware of their policy regarding prostitution. I have to admit, I'm very much on the fence about it. On the one hand, I feel the industry is dangerous, exploitative and not a Good Thing but then, if we decriminalise it, isn't that safer in some ways for the workers? Or am I being really naive?

Sorry, didyou.... I wasn't 'scrabbling' for any word, thanks. The word I used was the word I meant, which Petula has defined for you. If you had spent enough time reading the FWR boards to "know" that women's empowerment wasn't approved of, you would have spent enough time on here to know that you're talking utter rubbish. You would also have known what I meant.

I can't quite match your patronising tone. I'll try harder next time.

Buffy, you're too reasonable, and I am far too crabby. Thanks for expanding and making much more sense than I Grin

Blush
didyouwritethe · 22/01/2015 22:57

Yes, do try harder, Puffins. Practice makes perfect, and it's certainly a very worthwhile pursuit for a committed feminist.

fayyive · 22/01/2015 23:02

Labour and Tories are 2 parties I really don't want to get in, and unfortunately they are the 2 most popular.

LibDems aren't as bad but they have lost so much popularity a vote on them would be wasted.

Green it is for me, especially as it looks like they may be starting to grow in popularity.

PetulaGordino · 22/01/2015 23:03

Your post was rude and presumptive didyouwritethe. I gave you the benefit of the doubt - you clearly haven't been here long as if you had been you would have a better understanding of the diverse range of opinions and discussions that appear here

didyouwritethe · 22/01/2015 23:05

Presumptive???

PetulaGordino · 22/01/2015 23:08

Wrong word - meant you were making assumptions, which you did

didyouwritethe · 22/01/2015 23:08

"this power that is so-say newly available to women, do men seek it?" ????

FloraFox · 22/01/2015 23:09

puffins = thoughtful poster with a history of good points

didyiuwritethe = no evidence so far of thoughtfulness and no substantial contribution so far.

didyouwritethe · 22/01/2015 23:10

"Didyouwritethe you are misunderstanding the difference between "empowerment" and "empowerfulising". Te former is very much supported in this section, which perhaps if you stay here longer you might discover" ????

PetulaGordino · 22/01/2015 23:12

Are you trying to say something?

30somethingm · 22/01/2015 23:13

Lib Dems and Greens want to legalise prostitution which in my view will lead to greater exploitation of women.

Tories have driven home cuts that have affected women the most.

didyouwritethe · 22/01/2015 23:13

I always appreciate unbiased opinion, FloraFox.

If you're going to make a point, do get around to it. There's a dear.

didyouwritethe · 22/01/2015 23:19

Yes, what does this mean:

"this power that is so-say newly available to women, do men seek it?"

I really want to know!

didyouwritethe · 22/01/2015 23:21

"so-say" - what does it mean?

FloraFox · 22/01/2015 23:23

did there's no such thing as an unbiased opinion. The testicles of objectivity may be obscuring this obvious fact for you.

didyouwritethe · 22/01/2015 23:26

And "so-say" means....

PhaedraIsMyName · 22/01/2015 23:31

I was aiming for patronising…

Well you certainly achieved that but to be fair you were not that you were the only one. I think I may have missed some the nuances of who was being rude to whom due to post deletions.

I haven't looked at The Greens' policy. They didn't impress me at all during the Scottish Independence Referendum and seemed oblivious to the irony of hanging on to Salmond's coat tails whilst he was hanging Scotland's future on the (now very shoogly) peg of oil. Their former leader Robin Harper eventually cracked in the final week and launched a diatribe against the current leadership and Salmond's bullying bluster.

However as the Greens support independence and would side with the SNP I would never vote for them.

Someone posted that the Greens want to introduce mega-brothels like they have in Germany. There was a recent (Channel 4 ?) documentary which featured these; the interviews with the women were some of the most depressing things I've heard in a long time.

Are the Greens the new Lib Dems? Promise the earth (no pun intended) knowing they will never be called on to deliver? The Lib Dems have done so well haven't they when they were put on the spot.

didyouwritethe · 22/01/2015 23:36

I'd settle for the earth. I'd like the dc to have one to live on.
