Sticks head above parapet ... DD and hockey skirts

FrauHelga · 01/11/2014 13:07

DDs school have a rule that the girls can't go into town after hockey unless they put joggers on. Boys are allowed to go into town in rugby shorts. She has a major issues with this and saunters out every day in her skirt.

I fear a confrontation with the PE teacher is looming. I will be asked to come in and see them.

Anyone care to help me form a coherent argument?

They're for hockey (presumably for unrestricted movement) and not suitable for walking around town.

Shorts are a completely different outfit and display much less leg than a mini skirt which is what hockey skirts are.

You wouldn't say that girls should be able to walk into town wearing a swimming costume just because the boys could if they were wearing swim shorts.

Again, shorts are not swimming costumes.

No, just revisiting my youth!! Grin

Why does the uniform include skirts for playing sport anyway? Completely impractical. My PE kit included a netball skirt, though we always had to wear shorts underneath too. It was stupid then and it's stupid now, why the need for the "decorative" skirt?

The boys felt they were the hard done to ones though as the girls were at least allowed to wear jogging bottoms in winter but the boys weren't. They were stuck in their rugby style kit all year round.

LaurieFairyCake · 01/11/2014 13:26

Girls are perfectly fine to flash their arse in public in their own clothes

But while wearing school uniform they represent the school - it's why they have skirt length rules on normal skirts in schools

FrauHelga · 01/11/2014 13:28

To be honest, the joggers from Holister (sp?) cling much tighter than a hockey skirt and show the outline of her bum far far more than a skirt would. Yet they are acceptable because they are navy. And long legged joggers. And the skirt isn't. Although she's lazy and when she does it pulls the joggers on under the skirt.

So Laurie, are you saying girls shouldn't be allowed to wear mini skirts in town, just in case the Menz can't control themselves around children of a Saturday afternoon in the hight street? Really?

Jenny, I certainly didn't fear "setting anyone off" what a massive assumption.

Of course it is a thread basically about appropriate which is a difficult subject because everyone has different views. Personally I think seeing pants is not appropriate whoever they belong to. Others may disagree which is fine. I certainly don't think flashing pants is going to unleash a monster in any passing man though.

Wrt the school I suppose the most likely response will be they are inappropriate because they are too short and the school have standards or similar. In which case I'd be interested to hear their justification for using them for games, surely they are either appropriate length or not? Having said that i despise all this girls/boys sports clothes, there is rarely a reason why there needs to be a difference.

Chandon · 01/11/2014 13:35

Laurie explained why.

hollie84 · 01/11/2014 13:36

If the skirts are so inappropriately short that they are going to put girls at risk/bring the school into disrepute, then why on earth are they part of the uniform at all?

Viviennemary · 01/11/2014 13:38

The rule should be the same for the boys. I see why the school doesn't want the girls wandering round in those skimpy skirts but if they had any sense they would make the rule the same for the boys.

FrauHelga · 01/11/2014 13:38

I suppose the answer is to get her a skort. Less confrontational all round - the rule just struck me as unfair, but as I've said to her, it is the rules.

Too much, but i'll bet you that someone at school thinks it's more indecent for the girls to wear more revealing clothing than for the boys to do it

TooMuchCantBreathe · 01/11/2014 13:44

I don't think I'd agree with that jenny, I don't know the school obviously but I suspect if a boy tried to go out of school wearing the type of pants/shorts commonly worn under the gym skirt it would be deemed inappropriate. Certainly boys had to wear sports shorts, i.e. loose and fairly long. Skimpy hot pant style would not be ok.

Like the swim suit argument, I'm sure swim shorts are viewed differently to budgie smugglers!

KristinaM · 01/11/2014 13:45

Maybe the boys shorts are longer than the girls skirts ?

I'm at a badminton tournament right now. The boys are all wearing shorts which are mostly just above the knee.

The girls are mostly wearing skirts, which are very short, barely covering their knickers. I don't know if they are actually skirts with knickers sewn in and as I only know the parents of other boys, I can hardly ask !

The girls have the option of skirts or shorts . The girls wearing shorts are wearing them a similar length to the boys

So if the issues is about showing flesh in public, then the school might have a point

Of course, whether or not short skirts are suitable for playing sport in in another question all together

FrauHelga · 01/11/2014 13:47

I'll get her a skort.

There are many daft rules at most schools, mainly about uniform.
But if there wasn't there would be nothing to stop pupils turning up in just underwear, a school tie and a pair of shoes.
Or maybe just knickers and no bra because boys don't have to wear a bra.

Do they wear leotards for gym? Would she be happy walking round town in that?

Maybe she needs to find herself something else to rebel against.

cailindana · 01/11/2014 13:58

Why on earth is a school insisting pupils wear clothes that are "inappropriate"? They are the ones who chose the uniform - to turn around and say it can't be worn as it's so short is ludicrous.

Incidentally at my old school there was an issue with girls rolling up their everyday uniform skirt - there was so much time and energy wasted on toing and froing about this bloody skirt then some genius finally hit on the amazing insight that an incredible innovation called trousers exist. Trousers were introduced, problem solved. FFS.

QueenoftheRant · 01/11/2014 14:27

Yes, tbh I think skirts were women's wear because they are attractive, because ... well to be perfectly blunt they can make you vulnerable. I've been in situations where wearing skirts rather than trousers could have resulted in trouble. Honestly, which would you rather be wearing if strangers shove their hand up your legs. I don't like them on girls and the habit if having these stupid short gym skirts should never have been introduced.

Men are predators unfortunately... seen this report? www.bbc.com/news/uk-england-manchester-29803799 Want your daughters walking out in that environment in gym skirts?

TooMuchCantBreathe · 01/11/2014 14:33

Men are predators?

Wow, and there we have it.

QueenoftheRant · 01/11/2014 14:35

Um... yes. Many of them are. And in some parts of the country that really is many. I grew up in gtr mcr. I remember it as the majority.

Glad if you haven't had the same problems.

TooMuchCantBreathe · 01/11/2014 14:40

I'm sorry that you did. But sweeping statements about men as a whole just makes many people batten down the hatches. People come to these boards too afraid to challenge those kind of statements because of the response that prevails, as evidenced soundly by current threads.

Men as a whole aren't anything. Some men are some aren't like many other things but I think suggesting that the solution is for women and girls to cover up undermines the whole situation tbh.
