We are just about to rent a house and having seen it (alone) dealt with agents alone.
I said to my husband that I thought it was worth taking as it suits our needs. Having chased the contract to enable us to check it, I've have received the following: Envelope addressed to my husband. : Letter Addressed to : my husband. Contract addressed to BOTH of us!!! I know I don't earn but I'm expected to pay but not be part of our let!!! DH says I need to get over it but I'm beyond the point where anyone could change my mind. Surely I should be part of our future?!

Yeah that's crap. Complain.

AsAMan · 22/10/2014 22:37

Complain please. just a quick message addressed to whoever is in charge.

Zazzles007 · 23/10/2014 10:39

I would complain too. That's crap.

TheGirlFromIpanema · 23/10/2014 10:51

I'd give them the benefit of the doubt if you are not earning atm.

They are perhaps obliged to address the contract holder in these circs?

Ask them why it is they have done this, and find somewhere else if the answer is not satisfactory Smile

ChunkyPickle · 23/10/2014 11:41

Did the same to me (and nearly missed out on some important paperwork because he went away for a couple of weeks) - they'd never met DP, I had done all the viewing, paperwork, emails, calls, I was down as the primary renter and contact on everything I filled in, and still they switched us around on the contract, and addressed things to him (or if both of us, him first)

I complained after the mis-directed letter and they changed their system sharpish.

Barclays did the same when I added him to my bank account (for convenience) - I complained profusely and they corrected it and gave me 50 quid. It's not poor IT systems, it's the patriarchal society.

TheGirlFromIpanema · 23/10/2014 11:47

I do agree chunky honestly Grin

Banks etc are bloody shit and I always call it.

Just that OP mentioned her not working and therfore I assume not being the person being credit checked or what not.

I admitted clutching at straws. Ffs if even poxy high street letting agents (fairly modern business model - no hang ups leftover from decades ago) are doing this shit now then I fear there really is no hope Sad

ChunkyPickle · 23/10/2014 11:50

Oh I know Ipanema

I wasn't earning either - they still credit checked us both.

Estate agents are terrible (probably not all - but those I've encountered) - still full of comments about letting the ladies see the kitchen and talking to DP about the garage and extensions (cue blank look from him)

PumpkinGordino · 23/10/2014 11:51

i get the same thing all the time, despite my surname being higher up the alphabet than his, doesn't matter who signs up first or if at the same time

TheGirlFromIpanema · 23/10/2014 12:08

Aah, ok.

I don't rent so wasn't sure.

They are clearly sexist shits of the highest order.

TheWanderingUterus · 23/10/2014 12:18

When I added DH to my bank account, all my statements started arriving addressed to him, and him alone. Took a week to sort out and I get the feeling that a lot of the staff I dealt with couldn't understand why I was cross.

But, English Heritage sends all our renewal stuff to Mrs W. Uterus and Mr (initial) Uterus. All letters begin 'Dear Mrs and Mr Uterus which shows that some companies are capable of getting it right.

avocadotoast · 24/10/2014 18:59

When we had our mortgage approved the letter came to "Mr and Mrs DHinitial Oursurname". Despite the fact that I had dealt with everything from the start, provided all the documentation, etc Angry

Also, we have a double-barrelled surname (first name is mine from before we were married, second is his from before). Our bank seems to think that my surname is just the second part and that the first is my middle name. So. Annoying.

MrsChnandlerBong · 24/10/2014 19:53

I've just hadsomething very similar. I rent, have been renting with this particular agent for over three years now. Tenancy in my sole name, always has been. Yesterday I got a renewals letter addressed to Mr Bong. Rang them to say, there is no Mr Bong and assuming it was just a typo and was told "we always address letters to the head of the household". Can you believe that?!!
