Cancer isn't sexy.

Why are so many cancer research campaigns focused on sexualised images of women? Whatever possessed this lot - does anybody really think "mmm, disembodied crotches and a side helping of body-hair-shaming, that reminds me I really ought to donate to cancer research?"

It really boils my piss.

Jesus wept what were they thinking of... i really wonder what goes through the minds of some marketing departments.

YonicScrewdriver · 11/10/2014 22:41

There's a "no bra" day for breast cancer coming up soon as well - back view of woman in knickers, no bra.

YonicScrewdriver · 11/10/2014 22:42

This is CRUK allowing its logo on some salon's marketing, though, it's not a CRUK campaign...?

TessOfTheFurbyvilles · 11/10/2014 22:50

Oh for the love of the God.

NB: I notice they've featured a man on the end, is this is so they don't get accused of exploiting of women?!

Zazzles007 · 11/10/2014 23:20

Yep, the use of sex to sell something which has no relation to the message of the ad or the product/service being sold really, really pisses me off, particularly as I am a marketer as well. It is a sign of sheer laziness on behalf of the agency who designed and put this ad together. Email complaint time, methinks. Remember, every one complaint to an organisation means that 9 others thought the same and did not complain. Every complaint about advertising is (usually) taken seriously by the organisation.

YonicScrewdriver · 11/10/2014 23:22

I'd actually alert CRUK first as they may not even know their logo has been used.

AGnu · 11/10/2014 23:27

Please tell me we're not going to start having Facebook pictures as evidence of people's 'support' for this! Hmm

YonicScrewdriver · 11/10/2014 23:32

Don't think so gnu, think it's one London salon not a national thing like octobeard

BOFFA · 11/10/2014 23:34

I see this all the time, especially when it comes to breast cancer. The imagery is usually your classic slim young sexy models with their boobs coyly covered. Pisses me off tbh.

Greyhound · 12/10/2014 12:20

Something about this has been posted on my local town FB page my town is very backward with lots of "phwoarr get em out for the lads, all in a good cause type" crap.

I've posted to point out that a woman who has had a mastectomy might not feel so amused by the campaign and that men get breast cancer too.

I will regret posting that as I will get flamed and told I am a humourless feminist who can't take a joke.

scallopsrgreat · 12/10/2014 12:49

Tis the male gaze isn't it . Because even when women have breast cancer they have to think of the menz.

KarmaViolet · 12/10/2014 13:37

I got a very injured response on twitter to say they're only raising awareness.

OP posts:
PuffinsAreFicticious · 12/10/2014 13:41

Raising awareness of what though?

It feels like the cashing in on cancer that campaigns like tickled pink does. What's in it for them?

KarmaViolet · 12/10/2014 15:14

Awareness of cancer research? Although I can't imagine many people are unaware of cancer. I asked them why it had to be a fanny wax not a facial but no response.

And why breast cancer? Ovarian, uterine, prostate and bowel cancer are all in closer proximity to the genital area..

gamescompendium · 12/10/2014 16:55

But bowel cancer isn't in any way sexy. All that money goes to breast cancer when, frankly, it has one of the best recovery rates of all the cancers (96% alive after one year, 65% after 20 years). No-one's giving money to the unglamourous stuff like cancer of the oesophagus (60% death rate in the first year, and it's the 9th most common cancer).

SevenZarkSeven · 12/10/2014 20:50

Isn't there evidence that getting rid of all your pubes results in increased, um, unhealthiness in some way down there?

So, surely the ad is ludicrous. I mean, it's obviously ludicrous anyway, but doubly ludicrous if they are encouraging you to do something that may adversely affect your health in the first place Confused

Do cancer research know this company are using their logo?

rosabud · 12/10/2014 21:58

Interesting that the man on the end gets to stand with his legs apart purposefully taking up more room, whereas the women have to stand coyly with their legs almost crossed as if protecting their vaginas from assault. The subtle message is that men may choose to join in the beauty gooming regime and they may choose to join in the fight against cancer but REALLY we all know that men have nothing to fear, they are poised and ready for action against all frivolity and threats. But, women, watch out! Better not let the beauty standards down or cancer, like eveything else that is dangerous in society, will get you!

TooMuchCantBreath · 12/10/2014 22:07

Rosa, that's an awfully big leap.

I'm confused, how is this about sex? I see naked people, does naked people = sex now?

YonicScrewdriver · 12/10/2014 22:08

"Intimate waxes" are pretty much about sex, right?

TooMuchCantBreath · 12/10/2014 22:10

Are they? I've not had sex in 7 years so my waxing routine is nothing to do with sex.

YonicScrewdriver · 12/10/2014 22:11

You didn't think the image in the OP was a sexualised one? Really?

TooMuchCantBreath · 12/10/2014 22:12

The fact is it's about waxing because the company are donating. If it was barbour donating they'd be wearing wax jackets.

YonicScrewdriver · 12/10/2014 22:12

Incidentally, hasn't this spa co-opted the daretobare hashtag from the no make up selfie campaign.
