This is a really interesting interactive by the Guardian. I thought I'd share.

that graphic is really interesting, thank you for sharing. especially when the abortion rights are lined up against maternal mortality

That is interesting, thanks for posting.

Maternal mortality rate is high in the USA Sad

So what's going on in eg Egypt, where both abortion rights and maternal mortality are really low? Fascinating, thanks for posting.

That is very interesting. I would think that some of the apparent anomalies could be because of what the legislation actually says versus how it's interpreted. It could be that Egypt's law is liberally interpreted, or it could be that maternity provision is of very high quality throughout the country. Or it could be under-reporting of maternal deaths.

Some countries such as Belize, Ukraine, etc look a little strange. Abortion is not available for rape/incest. But it could be that that's not specified in the legislation but is allowable under one of the other categories.

The maternal death rates in some areas of Africa are very worrying. But that could be because of poor health care, or poor nutrition, or the effects of FGM. Or it could be continuing influence from whatever European country they were colonies of.

Nevertheless, there is a pattern. Where women have a choice, control over their own bodies, they have a better life outcome.

Doesn't explain the USA figures, though.

PuffinsAreFicticious · 02/10/2014 11:39

What does explain the maternal mortality rates in the USA are things like, lack of insurance cover leading to huge bills for maternity care, which in turn leads to pregnant women accessing the bare minimum, especially the working poor. Working poor women not being able to take the time they need to recover as there is no federal mandate for maternity leave.

It's almost as if the USA doesn't care about women or the poor, isn't it.

Puffins - I keep forgetting that. My default assumption is that the whole equal rights business, as signalled in the Declaration of Independence, should by now apply to everyone. Except it still only applies to the rich, and the white, and the male.

The maternity leave provisions are horrendous, but as that doesn't apply to the wives of the rich and the white and male, it doesn't matter. Sad
