Feministy music

Hello all. I'm prompted to write this post as my personal circs have recently changed, meaning that I am spending much more time listening to music in the car and while working at home (aka MNing). I've also been learning a little about the Women's Liberation Music Archive.

I would love to know what songs/pieces of music inspire you in a feministy way, partly to enable me to create some new Spotify playlists, but also because it's always fascinating and a real privilege to read about other people's personal relationship with music.

"Feministy music" can be defined anyway you like. For me, it's not just music with overtly feminist lyrics, but perhaps songs where a knowledge of the performer's life adds an extra emotional impact to their performance or a sense of connection, or maybe songs sung from a uniquely female perspective? Maybe even songs that just make you want to high-kick around the kitchen and make you feel braver about facing the world in some way? I don't think it matters if the original context of the song is un-feministy.

I'll go first:

and

All together now: "don't wanna see your face, don't wanna hear your words, why don't you just (f* off)" Grin

Very old skool, but Gonna Be An Engineer by Peggy Seeger is brilliant, as is tons of other stuff by her, and she provides a family connection with the wonderful Kirsty MacColl.

If you want something well intentioned but toe-curlingly awful, then rev up Right On Sister by the Tom Robinson Band.

I'm showing my age.

Have we had Bad Reputation - Joan Jett?. My itunes account is taking a hammering here, please keep them coming Blush

DemisRoussos · 02/10/2014 10:47

Yes Peggy Seeger, I have recently been listening to a lot of her stuff (and my DDs seem to really like it too). We've spent the last two summers listening to a lot of Fishermen's Friends, which the kids love singing along to but there are some dodgy lyrics about visiting women in different ports etc so not ideal from a feminist pov. Young kids generally like folk, don't they? Songs that tell a story.

Haven't listened to all suggested artists yet but so far am really enjoying Mary Prankster Smile

For £9.99 I can stream and play anywhere and I even get a 30 day free trial. Is this real? Why do I not know about this?[Outoftouchsmiley] Thank you Demis Thanks

Yes and you can store music offline on a phone/iPad and listen when you have no internet (like in the car). Amazeballs Grin

Honestly it's saved me so much money (tho obvs you don't own the music forever like you do with CDs)

Morrissey!

DemisRoussos · 03/10/2014 09:29

Any particular Morrissey tracks? I must admit, as a former Smiths-obsessed teenager, I've been put off a bit in recent years by how much of a total pillock he seems to be Smile

Katy Perry Roar
Joan Jett I love Rock n Roll

Not explicitly feminist but if you want folky music for kids Elizabeth Mitchell is great.

DemisRoussos · 04/10/2014 21:17

Thanks, Elizabeth Mitchell has gone down very well with the DCs
