I'm sure a lot of you will be familiar with this meme.

Do you think the FWR board, and Mumsnet as a whole, would be better if there was an 'ignore' button? This would allow individual users to block all the posts of posters they know to be trolls and derailers without preventing those who wish to view those posts from viewing them. So many brilliant women don't post on this board anymore because they were silenced or side-tracked into exhausting Groundhog Day arguments. It would be great for feminists to debate with other feminists without having to rehash Feminism 101 over and over again.

I would also add that I have written posts on things like transgender issues that some people have found uncomfortable and offensive, although that wasn't my intention. I realise some things are controversial issues but I would rather be blocked by individuals than be required to self-censor or be censored by HQ. Trolls and derailers are setting the agenda on this board too often and I think we need a button to deal with them.

I've just put this meme to good use, so thank for it. Smile

I find the 'strong women' thing odd. What, so only 'strong' women matter, then? What about those of us who're not particularly 'strong'?

Trolls who taunt women about rape and violence prey on women who are perfectly legitimately not feeling terribly strong. Guilt-tripping us by saying we should be strong enough to deal with things is really underhand, I think.

BriarRainbowshimmer · 24/08/2014 09:39

The strong woman comment = goady
Posters should take responsibility for what they say and not come here just to goad. It's not up to women to constantly be inhumanely "strong".

WhatWitchcraftIsThis · 30/08/2014 19:17

Why should we engage with trolls? Women's rights aren't up for debate ffs.

CaptChaos · 30/08/2014 19:29

WWIT I think we mostly try and engage with and refute trolls because there is a large lurking population on the board. It does get bloody tiresome sometimes though. A while back we discussed doing a sticky with a sort of 'Feminism 101' thing.

Glovender · 03/09/2014 16:16

WhatWitchCraftIsThis has absolutely nailed this point.

The human race has evolved for thousands of years on the paradigm of two sexes and, consequently, men and women now have not only a differing sense of their own identity, but are also subject to differing perceptions from those around them. When these differences are taken into account within the norms and values of society, it results in patterns of behaviour. It is absolutely beyond doubt that these patterns of behaviour should not be open to debate! FFS! Men as a class have historically abused women and continue to do so. They've forfeit their right to be heard and just need to bugger off and do what they're told. Anyone that disagrees with this is a misogynist and must be publically shamed and silenced. Maybe there should be some sort of iron contraption that we could place around the head of scolding MRA's? Some sort of bridle....?

WhatWitchcraftIsThis · 03/09/2014 18:42

That's me told then Glovender, shall we also debate the merits of slavery too?

What no?

mignonette · 03/09/2014 18:49

The only reservation I have is the feminism 101 comment. Excluding less informed women from the debate is surely not what this should be about? We all started from a level of zero knowledge.

I understand not wanting to engage with deliberately obtuse people but there must be Mumsnetters who might continue to lurk because they feel their grasp of the issues might be looked down upon by those MNers who have their ology in the subject.

CaptChaos · 03/09/2014 19:05

I called it feminism 101 for a sticky, so that women who have no prior knowledge could have a look at it and get the basics. It wasn't meant as an insult at all.

CaptChaos · 03/09/2014 19:06

It would have been helpful to me as well. Not having an ology in the subject.

AskBasil · 03/09/2014 20:50

Behold, Glovender's here.

Hmm

To enlighten us all with the splendour of his intellect, knowledge, empathy and general superiority.

CaptChaos · 03/09/2014 22:17

That would be because you're eminently reasonable, Buffy Grin

And ladies! please, we must be kind and lovely to our mansplainer. And offer him cake and shit!

Squidstirfry · 03/09/2014 22:51

So what happened to the feminism welcome mat idea? That's brilliant, as you can simply point to that rather than engage with the misogynist apologisers

Squidstirfry · 03/09/2014 22:54

I am a fan of the wordpress article "why i need feminism" that comes up to counter the "women against feminism" nonsense. (sorry for lack of link) that should be made a "sticky"

CaptChaos · 03/09/2014 22:56

We could maybe try again?

BeCool · 03/09/2014 23:36

I asked for an "ignore poster" option under Site Stuff and I was shouted at.

BeCool · 03/09/2014 23:41

I love this response to a MRA on Tumblr that I came across on FB of all places:

"The main problem I have with Men’s Rights Activists is that their name really doesn’t do them justice.

They’re Straight Cis White Men’s Rights Activists.

I have NEVER seen Men’s Rights Activists campaign for the inclusion of trans men in their spaces.
I have NEVER seen Men’s Rights Activists campaign to end the social stigma around black fatherhood.
I have NEVER seen Men’s Rights Activists campaign for better pay and equal career mobility for men of colour.
I have NEVER seen Men’s Rights Activists actively campaign for more gay men’s rights.
I have NEVER seen Men’s Rights Activists advise others in their group on how using faggot to emasculate men who aren’t part of their cause is alienating and marginalising other MEN.
I have NEVER seen Men’s Rights Activists campaign, raise awareness of, or support victims of male rape unless it’s in order to derail a discussion around female victims of rape.
I have NEVER seen Men’s Rights Activists campaign, raise awareness of, or support male victims of domestic abuse unless it’s in order to derail a discussion around female victims of domestic abuse.

Men’s Rights Activists are hypocrites and frauds. They’re bitter privileged white men who don’t want to campaign for the rights of men - they want to campaign to keep their privilege unchecked and their ability to discriminate against others.

If you want to be a real Men’s Rights Activist - be a fucking Feminist."

No cake but have found strangely appropriate cookies.

CaptChaos · 03/09/2014 23:56

Be Cool, that's brilliant. I might see if I can make that into a meme.

WWIT, lovely cookies, certainly better than the cakes and shit I suggested earlier.

BeCool · 04/09/2014 00:03

that would be clever and excellent capt

Squidstirfry · 04/09/2014 09:24

That's a fantastic response BeCool!

I only ever first heard of such a thing as a MRA when I started lurking/learning on feminism sites.

I have never actually come across it as a branch of activism in it's own right, only ever in the context of an assault on feminism.

The OP's pic is fab for responding to an MRA I have saved it and CaptChaos's one too Thanks!
